ELARA
“I NEED an audience with the Unseelie Court. I need to see the Unseelie
King, or whoever their ruler is, specifically.”
The five men in front of me wore varying shades of disbelief. The Four
Warlords of Minloa were my guards and soon to be my mates. The fifth
man was my guard and soon to be mate as well, Ryul. He’d been my friend
when we were children, and had waited a thousand years for me to return to
him.
“Absolutely not,” Kydrus growled, his sharp canines showing.
“No,” Ryul snapped.
“Why?” Durlan asked.
“There are some wrongs that need righted,” I said and then grimaced. “I
actually have a lot of travel I need to make.”
“You’re talking crazy,” Amrynn said. “Where is this all coming from?”
Venali was the only one who hadn’t spoken. Instead, he chose to glower
at me, his eyes sparkling with an emotion I couldn’t quite place.
“Have any of you been to Eltare before?” I asked.
The Unseelie had been forced out of Minloa, and lived on an island near
our continent. I wasn’t sure how many Unseelie there were, but it had to be
rather crowded for them to all fit on the island.
“No, none of us have been there,” Venali answered when everyone else
chose to stare at me silently. “And, I don’t think it’s wise for you to go there
either.”
“I guess we’ll just have to travel the old-fashioned way,” I said,
ignoring his second comment. “By boat.”
“You keep ignoring our questions,” Ryul growled.
I sighed and ran a hand down my face. “It’s complicated. I don’t really
want to get into it right now. The best thing we can do is sleep and then
discuss our travel plans tomorrow.”
“You said you have a lot of travel. Where else are you wanting to go?”
Durlan asked.
He was the only one who seemed calm, though his frown led me to
believe he didn’t want me to go, like the other four.
I rubbed the back of my neck, turned away from them, and grimaced at
the pain in my head.
“What’s wrong?” Amrynn asked, coming to my side.
Of course he would know I was in pain without facing him. Our time
alone had connected us a bit more than I liked to admit. And this new
connection…I wasn’t sure what to think about it yet. I knew what it was,
but I wanted to stay in my land of denial, so I wouldn’t even think of the
name.
“Headache,” I whispered, but that wasn’t completely true. My head did
hurt, but it was from holding back my power. I didn’t want to be a goddess.
I didn’t want to be Amara. I was Elara, dammit.
I swayed on my feet, and Amrynn wrapped an arm around me to keep
me upright.
