THERE WAS no doubt in Fyran’s mind-the three males standing outside the
convenience store were not human. They were vrokars, members of a
species with a culture steeped in ancient tribal traditions despite their
advanced technology, a species that considered themselves warriors.
The vrokars were standing just on the other side of the storefront
window, bathed in the artificial glow of the gas station’s exterior lights. The
glass separating them from Fyran muffled their low voices.

One of them had his back toward the window, displaying the insignia on
his leather jacket. The vrokar’s companions wore matching symbols. It had
been those insignias that had initially caught Fyran’s attention about half an
hour ago. The stylized alien skull with its elongated fangs and intricate
markings represented the Kurghan tribe, but Fyran didn’t recognize the
patterns woven around the symbol or the vertically aligned spears set
behind the skull, both of which would’ve denoted the subtribe.
He was familiar with vrokari culture, but he wasn’t a fucking expert on
their convoluted heraldry.

“Is this everything, sir?” asked the cashier in front of Fyran, a human
male who might’ve been as young as fifteen or sixteen or as old as his midtwenties.
Even after all the material he’d been made to study before coming to
Earth and living amongst these people for over a year, Fyran had trouble
guessing the ages of some humans. Regardless, this cashier had a certain air
of innocence about him. He had honest eyes.
The kid wouldn’t stand a chance if the vrokars outside decided to make
trouble.

Karak’duun, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want them to…
“Yeah,” Fyran replied, tugging his wallet out of his pocket.
The cashier scanned the two items Fyran had set on the counter—a
white and orange box of taquitos that had been proclaimed spicy and
delicious by their signage and an oversized cup filled with what could only
be described as semi-frozen sugar mixed with a hefty dose of red food
coloring.

“That’ll be six eighty-two,” the cashier said. His gaze flicked toward the
window, lingering momentarily on the males outside.
All three of the vrokars were around Fyran’s height—about six and a
half feet—and seemed solidly built. They were clad in leather and heavy
boots, their clothing possessing that worn but carefully maintained look that
his own clothing had taken on so often during his prolonged deployments
on alien worlds.

But it was highly unlikely that these vrokars were deployed here; they
were probably exiles or fugitives evading capture. Of course, vrokari pride
and tradition left them unable but to display their tribal affiliation for all to
see. Humans didn’t know any better, but Fyran did.
