“Welcome to the Galactic Gems Burlesque show,” Madam’s voice boomed
through the entire venue, and my stomach twisted as I listened. “Tonight,
we’re here to tease.” The audience giggled and laughed. “Titillate.” The
crowd whooped in response. “And get you tipsy and tipping.”
My heart pounded as I waited in my pose. I was ready, right? My
stomach twisted again, and my mouth felt dry.
I hadn’t prepared for this. I was going to vomit. Everything I’d eaten
today felt like it was about to climb back up.
“Remember, our gems like to sparkle, and money doesn’t grow on
solartrees. Tips are encouraged.”
All I could think about right now was that someone else should be first.
To be the opening act was both an honor and horror. I was still new—still

about how it would feel once I began to sing and dance. This was a song
that had come to me in a dream, one that seemed to haunt me with its
melody and words. I ran through the lyrics in my head, humming softly.
This act was about seduction. Teasing. I wanted everyone in the
audience to want me or want to be me.
A sheer pastel pink robe draped over my body, the bottom trailing
behind me on the floor. Underneath it, I wore a dusky purple corset
decorated with Swarovski crystals. Under that was a sparkly set of pasties
and bottoms. Gloves went up my arms, ready to be stripped off. My neck
glistened with jewels.
To my right was a grand piano with one of our musicians, Rascal, seated
and ready. He gave me a flirty smile and tipped his top hat, offering a bit of
comfort. Two massive feathered fans waited atop the piano, there for me to
