I SHOULDN’T HAVE BOTHERED. I HAD IN MY LAST LIFE. THE ONE BEFORE
that, too—and what did I have to show for it?
My father was not a man who listened to anyone but himself. That
should have been clear to me by now, yet here I was, in the balcony of his
office, gripping the railing tightly, trying not to throw up. He’d be here any
minute, and then I’d have to look him in the eyes and say the words I’d said
to him just last year—right before he forbade me from ever speaking about
it again.
The great Archibald Azarius, the dragon king of all shifters, the most
powerful—and feared—man in the world…and I was about to disobey a
direct order from him once more.
But past lives don’t really count, do they? Especially since nobody else
remembered them except me.
Letting go of a long breath, I focused on the view in front of me, the
beautiful fields that surrounded the manor, the giant walls in the distance
that surrounded it, the small town on the other side of it I’d only ever been
to in my daydreams. This place was all I ever knew. I’d been born and
raised here, and I’d never gone outside those walls. Not in this life, at least.
Some might look at it from the outside and consider me lucky—I had cars
and horses and maids and too many designer shoes to count. Everyone
bowed to me when I passed them by. Except for a handful of people,
nobody was allowed to even see my face. I was the princess, the dragoness,
the future queen of all shifters. Everybody wanted to be me.
Except me.
Some nights, I prayed so hard to wake up wearing someone else’s skin,
I almost believed that I actually would. The want and need were so great, it
just seemed absurd to think that they wouldn’t change reality.
But, of course, that’s not how the world worked.
In fact, I didn’t know how the world worked. I was just pretty damn
sure this wasn’t it.
“Stop thinking,” I told myself, turning back to my father’s office to find
distractions before I threw up for real.
Like every other room in the manor, this one was huge and fancy, too,
with crystal chandeliers and beautiful paintings and velvet furniture that I
was sure nobody had ever sat on. The floors were polished, the shelves
were polished, his large cherry desk looked like it had just been dipped in
lacquer. Even the map that covered the entire right wall was drawn to
perfection.
