Breakup, Breakdown, and Breaking Noses
Alina
“YOU’RE EPILEPTIC?” ARE MY boyfriend’s first words as soon as I
wake up from an episode.
Here’s to celebrating our three-month anniversary as a clandestine
couple.
All my sinister nightmares have dawned on me at this very moment. My
movements are sluggish, and my tongue has developed multiple sores from
biting down. I swallow hard, but even that tiny gesture has prickling pain
pinballing from one temple to another.
“You’re fucking epileptic?” Feroze urges again, seated at the edge of his
bed.
I sink further into the soft embrace of the pillows, clutching the bedsheet
tightly as my right arm continues to tremble with lingering aftershocks of
the seizure. What could have triggered it? It couldn’t have been the movie
we were watching, right? I’ve seen 10 Cloverfield Lane in the theatre before
without any issues. Or maybe the overwhelming stress of Feroze forgetting
our anniversary before I reminded him pushed my body over the edge.
Just yesterday, I marked a significant milestone in my calendar: three
years free from experiencing a seizure. Just yesterday, I got the
government’s approval to apply for my driver’s licence. But that was all just
yesterday, a fleeting moment of joy.
“Answer me!” he shouts, causing me to flinch and stumble over my
ragged breathing technique.
“How long was I out?”
He tuts his tongue and checks his watch. “Three hours?”
“Fuck.”
“Can you please just answer me?”
“I—I didn’t—” Think it was necessary to tell you?
Will my current mentality of shrouding my neurological disorder of
twenty fucking years stymie the potential impending marriage discussion
with our families?
Yeah. Kinda.
“Talk to me, Alina!” he practically shouts. His little voice crack makes
me giggle. “What the hell are you smiling at?” Guilty as charged. “You
think this is funny? Having a seizure is funny to you? I was sitting here,
holding my fucking breath, thinking you were possessed!”
From Emily Rose to The Conjuring, I’ve heard more exorcism jokes than
I care to admit.
It stung initially, especially during my chubby, hairy elementary and
middle school days when I was dubbed “Wolverine.” High school wasn’t
much better, where I decided to keep my epilepsy a closely guarded secret
that only my teachers knew, just in case I had a seizure—until I did in Mr.
Lang’s advanced calculus and suddenly became the topic of discussion. If
we watched a movie in class, my peers and my so-called friends would
snicker and give me the side-eye every time a character on the screen
started convulsing like a faulty back massager.
Thankfully, my partial seizures have only been witnessed by my family,
sparing me the embarrassment of a public meltdown.
Until now.
