Gorgeous. The man that owned the little herb shop was the most handsome
man I’d ever seen in my life. The first time I’d seen him, I’d gone home
thinking maybe I’d blown his handsomeness out of proportion or
something. There was no way a man that beautiful could be anywhere but
in Hollywood, right? But the next day as I peered at him through the
window of his shop, I thought that maybe I hadn’t blown him enough into
proportion… or whatever.
Sandy-blond hair with strands falling down across his forehead, and such
pretty blue eyes. He was tall… like really tall, and though I’d only ever seen
him be polite to his customers, and even the people who did exactly what
I’d been doing for weeks now, just standing there and staring, he looked less
than friendly, and more than a little intimidating.
I’d finally gotten the nerve to come inside the store, but already I was trying
to talk myself into leaving.
He glanced in my direction, and I quickly looked away, not wanting to get
caught, in case he realized I was looking at him in that way. I knew not
everyone cared about that stuff, but my brother and his friends had
definitely given me a reason to be leery of just anyone knowing my
sexuality, and Wehr was huge.
“What the hell are you doing here?” an angry voice demanded from my
right, making me gasp and spin. Burt Davis was red-faced and glaring
directly at me. “Nobody wants you loitering in their store. I know for damn
sure you’re not going to buy something. Were you planning on stealing from
this man?”
I heard a low growl come from the man at the counter, and I whimpered as
Burt stepped closer, forcing me to step back.
Burt had hated me since before my brother had… done what he’d done.
He’d heard the boys teasing me about being gay one day, and he’d been
hateful toward me ever since, even going as far as telling everyone I’d
probably actually been the brother they’d seen running from the community
center fire that night, because I was messed up in the head.
“No,” I whispered, shaking my head at his accusation. “I just needed––”
“Avery said you tried to steal bread the other day from her store,” Burt
snapped, cutting me off.
My eyes widened at that. “No. I didn’t. That’s not what happened.”
“I don’t want to hear it.” He stepped toward me again, and like before I
stepped back, trying to avoid his hands when he reached for me.
We both froze at the growl that rumbled through the room, turning to find
Wehr standing close, glaring down at Burt. “Do not put your hands on him.”
“Don’t you know who this is?”
