It said a lot about you, when a half crazed, fully protective, dragon-killing
human tossed his eight-month-old baby to you yelling think fast, before
rushing by to…
Never mind. I get it now. My surrogate son laughed manically as the
smell hit me so hard I actually jerked my head back like I’d been punched in
the face.

“This wasn’t the greeting I was expecting!” I yelled after him, but he
was long gone. I pursed my lips, turning my gaze back to the bundle of
blob, dangling from my outstretched hands and grinning at me. “It’s a good
thing you’re way cuter than you smell.”
Stalik gurgled out a giggle… and shifted. The dirty diaper split at the
sides, the material no match for his fat dragon bottom along with his tail.
The plop was a disturbing sound I would probably hear in my nightmares,
and I was suddenly holding a wiggling baby dragon out in front of me in a
near panic, because I just knew there was still a mess smeared across his
backside, and I had no idea what to do next.

Water hose? I nodded to myself. That definitely sounded reasonable.
But where the hell was I supposed to find a water hose?
Julian’s grandma zoomed by on her motorized wheelchair, her eyes
widening slightly on my predicament before quickly skittering away. She
was clearly intent on pretending she hadn’t seen me.
“Help,” I pleaded, speed-walking after her. I had completely
underestimated the top speed on that damn chair apparently, because with a
quick flip of her wrist, her tires squealed and she was gone, leaving black
streaks on the light gray stone walkway just inside the entrance to the main
house.

Spinning in a circle, I took in everything in the room with a skill
mastered nearly two centuries ago… and quickly discovered that I was
completely screwed. There wasn’t a hose, clean diaper, wipe, or even a safe
place to put the kid while I went and looked for one or all of those things.
How many battles had I fought over the years? Countless. I honestly
couldn’t even begin to put a number to it.

How many dire situations had I
come out of, still breathing, though sometimes bloody and definitely
hurting? Again, no idea. But this was going to be the thing that took me out,
because I was honestly at a loss. I’d never felt so helpless in my entire life.
Tiny baby dragon teeth sank into the back of my hand, and I
whimpered. He gnawed delightedly, his soft growls more of a hum of
happiness than a sound of distress… like I was starting to make.
When I thought I might actually start crying, Dux came rushing in,
holding the motherlode. He sighed in exasperation when he saw me, barely
pausing in his steps as he flipped out a little mat-like thing directly on the
floor.
