Prologue
The Awakening
There was a light, cloudless rain that late afternoon. Twilight stained the
horizon red, but the brightest red was the one running down the end of the
open driveway.
The dying man felt the iron taste of blood in his mouth as the lights in
his eyes darkened faster than the sun sank below the horizon. In the
distance, a figure with its back turned away.
As his vision darkened, the man looked for something to hold on to in
that last moment and a flood of thoughts came to him, so fast that he could
barely identify, most of which were totally disconnected.
A song, that preview of the next episode of a series, an excerpt from a
book, the food he had ordered, two lines from a movie he watched alone, a
boring joke… Marília. Everything went dark and one last thought came to
mind: it’s over.
“— Ricardo” he heard the call. It was a sweet and familiar voice, which
warmed him like a soft blanket during the winter of that moment.
“— You can’t go so far as not to return to my arms.” The voice
continued distantly.
“— But we are already that far away. He finished”. If he was responding
to a delirium arising from the fading life, it no longer mattered, because that
voice was the best delirium for that moment.
“— I told you I would keep you safe.” The answer seemed farther away
from beginning to end as everything grew darker and quieter, until,
suddenly, the sound of rain broke the silence and everything became clear.
And then, as if waking up one morning, he opened his eyes and sat up
as if waking lazily in his bed on holiday. The rain had thickened a little and
washed his clothes a little more of the blood. However, when looking for
the wound under the rib, he found nothing but his torn shirt. “How is this
possible?” He thought.
Looking forward, he saw someone standing at the gate, looking at
him. He recognized her as the figure who had walked away moments
before. It was her attacker. The same kept his glasses in the inner pocket of
the suit he was wearing while, with the other hand, he drew a dagger and
began to walk quickly towards him.
He tried to get up with one hand resting on the floor while holding the
other out in front of him, as if measuring the distance between himself and
his opponent. And it was at that moment that he noticed the water rushing
towards the man who was approaching with the dagger in his hand. And all
the water running down the ground and falling from the sky was
concentrated at a point between the two and converged in a single gust
against the aggressor. He was thrown against the garage door that broke,
opening space to the street at the same time that a truck passed hitting him,
with a violent noise and a horn.
“— What the hell…?” asked himself the one who, until then, minutes
before, had fainted in that spot, not knowing if he was more scared for
having come back to life or for what the water had done.
