All Nyole could hear was the echoing clicks of Queen Lylis’s
heels on the cold stone floor. A sound that seemed to go on for eternity, a
lot like this hall they now traveled down. It looked like any other he had
seen in the castle, but something wasn’t quite right. Since coming to Ebon
after attending council with the other Kings, Nyole had become well
acquainted with the empty castle. Despite this, he couldn’t quite tell where
they were. Everything seemed… out of place? The only explanation was
magic. Likely a ward placed by Lylis herself. Something to disorient
anyone who wasn’t allowed to enter these halls unguided. The thought
made him want to scoff but letting that sound escape would surely piss her
off.

His thoughts wandered back to what he had seen in Lylis’s mind.
What she threatened do to those he cared about the moment he made her
too angry. A shiver traveled down his spine as he blinked back the emotions
threatening to be exposed. Her armies started pushing into the other
kingdoms about a hundred years ago and at first the kingdoms had resisted.
Then the downfall of the north happened so fast no one knew what to think.
Lylis didn’t ask for much, all she wanted was for Nyole, King of Asha, to
do her bidding from time to time. If she did not get what she wanted…
Well, she would pick off one capital at a time. A tyrannical queen that
seemed to have no motive.

They could fight back, but the few small armies from other
kingdoms, sent to combat her forces all wound up dead. No survivors to
explain what happened. Just blue skinned and bleeding from every orifice
on their bodies. So, after much discussion and the weight of the treaties
bearing down on him. It was agreed that Nyole would do as she wanted. Of
course, he was out voted on the decision, but unless he wanted the other
kingdoms backing Lylis he had to agree. He was strong-armed into doing
whatever tasks she had for him.

He hated Lylis. He hated this place. He hated himself for being too
weak to stand against her. He hated these damn lilac flames that bathed the
halls in a soft pink glow instead of a normal orange. He hated that he
obeyed her every order, but he knew there was nothing he could do. What
he truly hated though, was that a small part of him did fear the female.
“King Nyole, if you would please keep your emotions in check
when we get to our destination. I wouldn’t want those feelings to be used
against you.” Lylis snickered with a hint of laughter. Nyole glared at her
back, lips twitching with aggravation.
