GENEVIEVE
London, September 1863
“Gen, I need you to come with me. Hurry up now.”
I startled a bit as my sister Emery came up swiftly behind me while holding
a smiling baby Beckett.
Turning toward the intrusion, I ignored Emery and puffed up my cheeks,
making Beckett laugh and reach for his favorite auntie.
My sister pulled her adorable two-year-old little cherub out of my reach and
whispered frantically, amber eyes flashing, “Genevieve, I mean it. I need
your assistance.”
Frowning, I dropped the arms that had been reaching for my nephew and
regarded my dramatic sister. Her husband, Augustus—Augie, to close
friends and family—was approaching on the garden path with their
daughter in tow and was nearly upon us.
I’d been speaking with our brother before Emery barged over and
interrupted with her odd demand. Silas finally found his voice and
expressed his sibling offense, “I say, Em, you interrupted my story about

and demanding, “Gen, I really need you to come with me.”
“Why?” I asked, crossing my arms over my chest. The early September day
was fine indeed. I wished to remain out of doors in this lovely garden with
the fountain bubbling happily at my back. I would even continue listening
to my brother’s ridiculous stories. That was how fine the day was in
London.
Emery visibly cast about for an answer. She was terrible at lying or
fabricating, or anything that deviated from her straightforward manner. I
quite liked that about her, but I wouldn’t admit it. That broke the sibling
code of torture and mayhem. “Well,” she finally attempted. “I need help
with the children.” She indicated Beckett on her hip before reaching back
and plucking Reeve’s little hand from her father’s grasp. “See. Two children
under the age of five. I am overwhelmed,” she said with a beleaguered sigh.
I rolled my eyes. “Please assist me in bringing the children inside.”
My family was gathered today for a garden party at my eldest sister, Patty’s
home. It was a decidedly informal event for Bartholomews, former
