The Palace
They stood motionless and stared at the archway over the doors to this
sunken palace. There had been an eye, blinking at them. Unbelievable, but
they had all seen it. She was here, likely miles underground, beyond a
hidden lake, and deep within this weird cavern of fallen, primitive Vivilii,
all to follow the trail of alien signals in the stalk network. It was along way
from Novum Atheni. Considering her usual insane impulses somehow
produced results, her friends could only join her on this underground
expedition, even if they regretted it.
“Addy, is that what you meant by an eye blinking at you?” Cindy
whispered, afraid to move.
“Yes, and since you’ve all seen it, I know I’m not crazy!” Addy said.
“Only Alphas or Hippocampites can claim to have seen the eye more
than once,” Apollo said. “But it appeared for all of us.”
“How long have people been seeing it?” Addy asked.
“I have heard stories of the eye since I was in the creche, ten or more
years ago,” Apollo said.

golden grass.”
She touched the furniture and found it warm, like the walls of Vivilii
settlements, though the air was comfortable.
At the end of the room was a small, raised platform that featured a
single chair, fashioned like the others. The wings of the platform ended in
sweeping stairs that led to a second floor. Four other doors on the ground
floor were closed.
Nate raised his wrist and a blade clicked into place. Roger mirrored the
motion, and a few of the native detachment who had followed them inside
also raised their cannons.
“What?” Addy asked, surprised by the sudden tension.
“This place feels strange,” Nate said.
Apollo hadn’t raised a weapon. He was arcing his neck to take in the
sweep of the high ceiling and the swirl of glowing red that reached up the
walls to spiral and twine about itself.
“Check the rooms, but don’t shoot anything,” Addy said.
They split up and went through the chambers on the ground floor. Addy
saw rooms full of musical instruments, empty ballrooms, dining halls, a
kitchen, a large sauna and bathhouse, and stairs down to a lower floor. In
several rooms they found sculptured figures prepared to engage
