Taken
“There are men at the door—in the foyer. They’re Primarchy men—
here for you,” the headmistress said, tightening her grip on Addy’s wrist
and pulling her across the barracks hall.
Addy, yawning and wondering if this wasn’t a bad dream, followed in
her nightclothes.

The headmistress stared at Addy expectantly, as if Addy had done
something seriously wrong. She heard hard voices from beyond the door,
and suddenly everything was far too real.
“I didn’t do anything—I’ve never even been reprimanded!” Addy
insisted.

“Stand aside!” a muffled voice ordered from beyond the hall doors.
There was an argument. The academy guards were putting up a struggle
at the door.

“What do you know?” her headmistress asked.
Addy could only stare, agog.

A crash came from the foyer and the sounds of argument suddenly
ceased. The wide, once reassuring academy doors opened.
Everything was wrong: the nighttime shadows, the alien glow of
streetlights spilling from the windows, the emptiness of this hall. During
any hour of any day, she would have been obscured by hundreds of girls,
nearly anonymous among them, and now she was exposed.
“I don’t want to go,” Addy insisted. Not waiting for a reply, she
rambled, “Do I have to—I’m not dressed; can I just go back to my bunk to
grab my things?”

A harried assistant arrived with a half packed bag full of Addy’s clothes,
some spilling to the floor. She gasped picking them as the bag was pushed
at her.

Slinking in from the night, were two men. Tall, clean shaven, and with
the strident pace of athletic brawlers they paced the hall.
Instead of house uniforms, they wore the alien clothes of Primarchies.
Tailored jackets and slacks, without adornment, shimmered under the dim
lights. This arrangement of clothing was once called, suit. The men scanned
for threats. The eyed the headmistress, her assistant, and finally, the
shivering girl behind them.

“Addy Pershing,” one said, coming closer than she liked.
The other produced a data-slate and inspected a picture taken from last
term’s yearbook.

“My hair’s longer,” Addy said.
She had been sixteen then, and her awkward, gangly limbs and bright,
red hair were momentarily tamed, still, and dignified for the photo. She had
even smiled.

Her eighteenth birthday was less than a month away, and sometime
soon, she would have to view herself as an adult. Catching her reflection on
a data-slate screen, she saw at her wide, fearful eyes and embarrassing
tangle of hair. Adulthood felt far out of reach.

“But why must she go with you? Any questions can be answered here
and now—with our full cooperation,” the headmistress insisted.
Dauntless, they gestured towards the foyer. Addy wanted to fight, to
scream. The urge welled up. But these men would think little of dragging
her out, or restraining her. She contained her fear.
Shivering, Addy took her first step.
