Notification lights flickered a few times
before going black. The rectangular
screen folded in on itself and slowly shifted downward until it disappeared
into the surface of the desk. The air in the room felt cold and crisp, which
was expected in an office so far underground.
Daemon took a deep breath. The video conference call with his
sister and friends in Louisiana left him feeling conflicted. It was so good to
see them, great in fact, but he wished there had been more time to catch up.
There was so much he wanted to tell his little sister, Xeni that couldn’t say
in front of everyone else. He wanted to know more about the new girl,
Coral. Could she really be the one they had been waiting for all these
years? Could she really be the bridge to join the two sides?
Daemon said a quick prayer for Hedda and her younger sister.
Although he had never met Dorthea himself, he thought the world of Hedda
and knew the sudden death of her sister would be causing her enormous
grief.
Stealing a quick glance at the calendar, Daemon calculated it would
take three to four days for the group to travel to him in Pompeii. He
assumed they would be taking the doors in the Great Hall as far as they
could, and then would have to tree jump from there- staying at hideouts
along the way.
Once they were here, Daemon would steal Xeni away from the
group and they would have a minute to catch up. He would ask how she and
Reed were doing and then tell her everything that happened between him
and Lavender.
Xeni was quickly becoming the toughest woman he knew, but
Xeni had an uncanny ability to understand the inner workings of a
relationship and managed to immediately identify exactly how he was
destroying any chance of romantic love for himself. He could really use
that insight right now.
Daemon wrapped the thick green scarf Xeni had sent him around
his neck and used it to warm not just the goosebumps forming, but also
bring warmth and healing to his wounded soul. Lavender’s final words, the
ones that ended their relationship, were still so raw and painful that
sometimes Daemon felt like even the simple act of breathing was
impossible without her.
“Three or four days.” He pushed the button on the side of his cell
phone and stared at the picture on his lock screen. He had his arms wrapped
around the shoulders of a beautiful girl with bright eyes and a confident
smile. His own smile was so big it bordered on comedic. But that was how
Daemon felt around Lavender: like he was so stupidly happy he could burst
from every seam at once.
“Xeni’s going to be pissed to see how I royally screwed this one
up.” Daemon put his phone down and turned to watch monitor on the far
wall.
