King of Gold
The horse thundered across the valley floor.
Eighteen-year-old Jaden Blacknett tugged on his stallion’s reins, urging
the beast to gallop faster, though they already pounded through the trees at
breakneck speed.

The Whisperwood rushed by in a dizzying blur of greens, browns and
golds. Through the rustling canopy, bits of lucent sky flashed.
As the wind streaked through his blond hair, he glimpsed a white coat
rocketing past the black barks of leafy oaks and pungent pines. The rare
white stag, which Jaden and his companions had been hunting for over an
hour now, sprinted as the group of hell-bent hunters gained on their snowy
victim.

Through the metallic, ripping rhythm of the wind, Jaden heard his twin
sister Diana’s triumphant laughter as she raced past him, red hair streaming
behind her. As often happened, the two of them had left the rest far behind.
A hunting horn blew, a strident, moaning baritone, signaling the time for the
king’s hunting party to regroup.

But Jaden wasn’t stopping anytime soon—and he could tell from his
sister’s tense body that the idea had failed to even occur to her. The stag
was slowing down visibly now, the headlong chase finally tiring even the
animal’s savage strength.

Jaden drew his spear from the leather weapon’s pack buckled tightly to
his horse’s left flank, steadying the bolting stallion with a soothing pat upon
a muscular neck. He saw Diana nock an arrow to her goldenwood bow and
take careful aim. Grinning with anticipation, Jaden sighted along his spear,
its razor edges glittering in the sunshine. When he was absolutely certain he
had his aim perfect and there existed only a sliver of a chance he would
miss, he hurled the spear, just as Diana in front of him released her arrow.
For a moment, the two weapons soared side by side with lethal, skilled
ambition before plunging deep into the doomed stag’s hindquarters. The
animal collapsed instantly.

Jaden spurred his stallion forward, to where the stag lay writhing in
agony. It was a magnificent beast, with elegant coils of huge antlers. Blood
pooled beneath it in on the needles, pinecones, and moss underfoot. The
pain visibly coursing through its body struck at Jaden, leaving him
uncertain and brittle as to their actions in deposing such an innocent
creature. Yet this was what he had been raised for. Hunting was but mere
practice for the larger game, for the battlefields of Jaden’s future.
Beside him, Diana had abandoned her palfrey and bounded over to the
stag. As she dismounted, she brushed her fiery curls behind her ears and
brandished a long dagger, raising it high.
