Things could always be worse. Mantra of my life.
I mean, sure, it was Monday morning, which seldom thrilled me.
But I’d learned the rhythm of our week, and the day was looking up now
that the breakfast rush was behind us, that frenzied two-hour period in
which Maya took each order as she plated the one before it, leaving me to
work the espresso machine until my hands ached and my apron was stained
with splashes of hot milk. That was a miserable time, especially on
Mondays, when the DPP agents who’d had all weekend to relax stumbled
into the café for their necessary chemical stimulation. But the rush was past,
and while Maya hid out in the kitchen, putting the finishing touches on the
lunch specials, I had a chance to properly clean the equipment, rearrange
the display cases, and breathe. The café was so much more pleasant when it
was quiet.
Relatively speaking.
Oh, Mangia Due was a friendly space, and Maya had put her touches
on the café to make it her own: tables and comfy chairs to accommodate a
variety of groups, a small wooden stage in one corner for weekend karaoke
sessions, a television on the wall for background noise, and an assortment
of minimalist light fixtures, sleek but annoyingly low-hanging. Unless it
was late on one of our weekend bar evenings, the café tended to smell like
coffee and baked goods. Our customers were seldom rude, and most tipped
well. I might have enjoyed working behind the counter, had I wanted to be
there in the first place.
I wasn’t a restauranteur like Maya—I was a private investigator.
Okay, a very green PI, but I had a license and business cards, the whole
shebang. As far as I knew, my website was still out there, inviting
suspicious spouses and worried parents to contact me for a confidential
consultation. But if I’d had any potential customers since Halloween, I
didn’t know. I hadn’t even checked my email in nearly eight months, as my
jailers grew twitchy whenever I got too close to a machine with access to
the real world.
But things could have been worse.
I could have still been locked in the windowless holding cell in the
Division of Plants and Potions where I’d awakened last November. Sure,
I’d basically been abducted by aliens, but they weren’t the human-eating
sort, by and large, and they’d finagled a cover story to allow me to reassure
my parents that I wasn’t dead in a shallow grave. My family believed I’d
been thrust into witness protection for my own safety, and they understood
that I couldn’t contact them so as to keep them safe. Nonsense, all of it, but
I couldn’t very well tell them the truth: I’d wound up stuck in a magically
created world, unsure whether I’d ever see home again, because I’d gone to
Maya’s Halloween party.
