Tabitha
I flop out of the suitcase onto hardwood floorboards, cheeks hot and
breathing hard. It was cramped in there. Hot and dark and stifling. If I’d
waited one more hour, my muscles would’ve locked.

There are more comfortable ways to break into an apartment, that’s for
sure. Picking locks or squeezing through windows. Wriggling through air
conditioning shafts. But being carried in, zipped away in luggage or taped in
a cardboard box—that’s my favorite. They might as well roll out the
welcome mat. So pleasing.

My joints pop as I stretch out my limbs, reveling in all this sudden space
and fresh air. Spencer Arnoult’s penthouse is dark, all silence and shadows,
but even in the gloom I can tell this place is nice. Laying back on the hallway
floorboards, I count four big paintings on the walls and a small sculpture of a
cresting wave on a plinth.

Not what you’d expect from a tech bro, I’ll give him that. I’d pictured
purple neon floor lights and cheeto-dust fingerprints on everything. Framed
posters of naked women and tentacle monsters. Instead, the apartment smells
like orange blossom and night air, and the furnishings I can make out are
downright tasteful.

So the guy’s mature and artsy. I like that. There’s nothing more
depressing than a rich man’s apartment filled with chrome and glass and
nothing else–all white walls and sharp edges and zero personality. An airport
lounge made chic.

I mean, I should know. I burgle enough of them.
Resting one palm on my stomach, I focus on slowing down my gasping
breaths. Getting calm. Centered and ready. The most uncomfortable part of
the night is over but my work has just begun, and the last thing I need is to be
rushed and sloppy.

Somewhere in this penthouse is a priceless jewel. Spencer Arnoult bought
it at auction last week, and in all his cocky glory, he didn’t store it in a bank
vault. He had it delivered here, to his apartment in the city. Practically
dangled it under my nose.
And it’s a beautiful jewel. A fist-sized sapphire the color of ocean mist.
I’m going to find it, lick it, and keep it.
“C’mon, girl.” I always time my little visits for when no one’s home. It’s
safer, obviously, but it also means no one hears me talking to myself as I roll
onto my side, stiff muscles aching, and push onto my hands and knees. This
is part of the routine, too.
Cow pose.

Cat pose.
Downward facing dog.
If my burgling luck ever runs out, maybe I’ll teach yoga in prison.
I’m still shaking out my stiff arms two minutes later, padding softly
through Spencer Arnoult’s kitchen. I never wear shoes to burgle. Can you
imagine sharing that cramped suitcase with a pair of sneakers? Besides, shoes
leave prints, and I don’t leave clues behind. That’s amateur hour. Black socks
work just fine, along with black leggings, black gloves, a black long-sleeved
top, and a black beanie to tuck away my long hair.
