Anietta
spend so many hours of my life hidden in musty closets. Seriously, you’d
think the sorts of men I’m sent to kill would air out their fancy suits once
in a while, but no. Tonight’s clothes are as crusty as their owner, and as I
silently stretch my limbs one by one in the corner of the closet, the scent of
mothballs tickles my nose.

Screwing my face up, I fight the urge to sneeze and scowl at the dark
closet walls, nose itching and eyes watering.
I won’t sneeze. I never do. You think a stupid mothball would throw me
off my game?
My target is three rooms over, hosting a poker game in his personal study.
After snooping around this mansion for hours last night, I can officially say:
money does not buy taste. There is such a thing as too much gold leaf.

I mean, I guess I wouldn’t know. I spent years in a grimy studio
apartment with a foldout bed and water stains on the walls, and despite
making a name for myself in this city’s underworld, I still only moved to a
slightly nicer place four months ago. And I still haven’t fully unpacked. Call
it nerves—the constant fear that I’ll blink and everything I have will melt
away. For whatever reason, I’ve never truly settled.
But anyway, if I decked out my tiny apartment in red velvet and marble
like this guy’s mansion, people would come knocking for me to tell their
fortunes.

Thump.
A muffled crash floats through the walls, followed by the tinkle of
breaking glass and the roar of laughter. Yes, please laugh and joke together.
Get rowdy and drunk for me. It can only help me if my target’s visitors wake
up with blurry memories. And if he comes staggering in here after too many
drinks, already clumsy and vulnerable, even better.

I yawn, quiet as a cat, jaw cracking in the silence. It’s hot in here,
surrounded by the dark shadows of suit sleeves. Muggy and stale. I’m itching
to stride out there and slit his throat at the freaking poker table, subtlety be
damned, but that’s the pins and needles talking.
What should I eat after this? I’m kind of craving falafel.
Another burst of savage laughter. That probably means a humiliating loss
for some poor sucker, but whoever it is, I won’t pity them. They’re all the
same, those men. Old and leathery, yet pawing after college-aged girls young
enough to be their granddaughters. Tight-fisted and mean-spirited, calling
themselves titans of industry when really they got lucky or were born to a
rich name, then built their fortunes by bleeding everyone and everything else
dry.

I’m not bitter. I swear.
But I won’t lose a wink of sleep after killing this oil baron.
“Come on, come on.” I tap one foot on the closet floor, arms crossed.
