VERA
Can you at least try to act like you’re a human tonight?”
“So I should act like an asshole to everyone around me?”
Henry stopped abruptly beside me on the sidewalk,
closed his eyes, and let out a deep sigh. “You know that’s not what I meant.
Look, if you can’t do this, Vera, I swear to all the gods that we will turn
around right now and go back.”
I stopped walking too, and after thinking for a second, I tapped him on
the nose, making him open his eyes. “I guess your kind isn’t all bad.” I
grinned. “You did sneak me out tonight. And you smuggled me these
clothes.”

I tried to do a little spin to show off the short dress but stumbled slightly
in the heeled boots he’d given me to wear. I wasn’t used to wearing shoes at

I straightened up, smoothing out the dark purple fabric of the dress
against my skin, and gave him my best pose.
“You look different,” he finally managed to say.
I rolled my eyes. “And you really know how to give a girl a
compliment.”

Henry was right though. I’d seen myself in the reflection of his car door
when we parked, and it had taken me a second to even realize that it was
me. This little dress was nothing like the boring stuff they made fae wear
every day—the baggy dresses, the loose shirts and pants that were never
quite the right size. Forget shoes; fairies were not allowed to wear shoes.
No, we were best kept barefoot by the humans, as if the small comfort of
shoes might make us forget we were prisoners.

So yeah, it was taking every ounce of my concentration to stay upright
in these boots as we walked over the gravel of the driveway that led to the
mansion in front of us. I’d never seen a house so large before—or any
houses at all since I was a child and brought to the Island. I’d been shocked
