Linan Clanguard—the man who had orchestrated the death of my
family.
I stood frozen in the doorway, my grip on Jagger so tight my body
was shaking with tension as my watery gaze moved from my concerned mate
to Linan. The malice radiating off of him had my gut twisting, and the look in
his eyes was absolutely lethal, filled with hatred and the desire for pain—my
pain.
That alone would have been enough to tell me something was wrong, but
my gut was telling me it was more than that—far more than just simple
‘dislike’ for me.
I didn’t need proof that this was the man who killed my family, but my
subconscious gave it anyway. Linan Clanguard’s name echoed loudly in my
head, Rebecca’s voice prominent above any other thought. It was from the
day that I thought I lost everything, my memory and my family. With a
violent tug, my magic pulled me under, lifting the heavy fog that had
concealed a memory long forgotten.
I moved silently down the hall, somehow knowing that being as quiet as
possible was important. I wasn’t supposed to be here, but when my mom
disappeared from the party, I felt the urge to leave as well—she needed me. I
didn’t understand why, but it felt like she did.
Moments later, after silently making my way through a dark corridor, I
froze before turning the corner, the sound of harsh adult voices stopping me
short.
“Leave, Linan.” That was my mom’s voice, but not the one I knew…it
sounded so scary. I didn’t think I’d ever heard her voice sound like that, and
while I wasn’t scared of her, a trickle of unease slithered down my spine.
A dark chuckle filled the space. “Not without my wife.”
My brows knitted together, and a soft wounded sound had my chest
fluttering nervously.
My mom spoke again. “Carol is staying. You weren’t invited here, you
are not welcome here, and you will not be taking her when you leave.”
“Carol…” The man’s voice was softer this time, seemingly ignoring my
mom.
“Don’t listen to him,” my mom said soothingly but firmly.
“I won’t.” I didn’t recognize the woman’s voice. It was barely audible, a
weak whisper.
“You fucking bitch,” Linan snarled. “This has nothing to do with you—”
“It has everything to do with us, Clanguard,” my dad snarled as he
passed me in the hall, a furious energy surrounding him. His hand grazed my
shoulder, a silent signal that he wanted me to stay hidden.
He had done something similar before during a conversation in his office,
one where some men had been mad about something going on in the city. I’d
been stuck hanging out behind his desk, quietly reading a book for what felt
like hours while they argued. Despite how frustrating it was, I trusted my
dad’s opinion on a situation like this.
