Allie Dawson felt her entire body start to relax as the light rail
neared the next stop. Out the rain-streaked window she could see
a bright red neon sign glowing like a beacon in the night. The Ruby Slipper,
or just Ruby’s as she and her friends called it. After the day she had, nothing
could be a more welcome sight. She could hardly wait to duck inside and
unwind. Being that it was only Wednesday, Allie had zipped off a text to
check if Rey, her best friend, was hanging out there with any of their other
friends. Thankfully, she was and now all Allie wanted was to get to the bar,
take off her ridiculously uncomfortable shoes, and relax over a cold drink.
At last, the train stopped.

Allie hurried through the wet April night until
she was ducking into the warmth of a place she considered her second
home. Ruby’s was special, and she paused to close her eyes. She took in the
mixed aroma of bitters, citrus, and … gardenias. She smiled knowing the
flowery scent could only mean one of the regulars, Shelley, was in her usual
seat along the long wooden counter. She was having one of her three gin
and tonics before heading home to her four cats. Her perfume was
unmistakable and a little much at close range. Otherwise pleasant, it made
up just another part of Ruby’s.

With a sigh, Allie opened her eyes and found her way to the large
horseshoe table in the corner. It was the spot where her circle of friends
always sat. Allie slid onto the vinyl bench. Rey was there as promised, as
well as Marty, her roommate, and another longtime friend, Nikki. They all
smiled, exchanging hellos as Allie shook out her shoulder-length blonde
hair before slipping off her damp coat. “Rough one?” Rey asked, and Allie
rolled her eyes while she took in the sight of a bottle of her favorite Oregon
microbrew sitting in front of her. Still glistening with condensation, she
thought for a moment she might cry from her friends’ act of kindness by
having it ready for her. It truly had been yet another lousy day at work.
“Should I order a round of shots?” Nikki asked with a raised eyebrow.
Clearly, Allie’s frustration showed on her face.

“God, don’t tempt me.” Allie answered, picking up the bottle and taking
a deep swig before setting it down with a sigh.
“Talk to us,” Marty prompted, and Allie leaned back against the red
vinyl, trying to let the day’s events slip away.
