There was nothing.

Blood interrupted by flashes of teeth and claws. Everything colored in
shades of red.
Bare feet sloshed through ankle-deep water as strips of algae clung to the
torn hemline of frayed denim. Every other step faltered as distressed wails
reverberated through his head. Hands gripped at his ears as if they would
stop the desperate noises from repeating. His body fell forward, engulfed up
to his waist by the swamp. Teeth gnashing against one another in pain as
cries ripped from his throat, his heart thrashing against his insides. He
roared against the tight pain in his chest, his exhausted body vibrating with
the last of his lingering energy; the energy he would need to get somewhere

Ragged, tormented breaths fell from his lips. His eyes closed before he
caught his reflection in the water under him. His teeth were now too large in
his mouth; his lips pulled back with some difficulty as the canines and
incisors were too sharp against his tender skin. Running trembling fingers
over his chin and cheeks, he found it smooth and devoid of the dark hair he
had minutes ago. His eyes fluttered open to his reflection, distorted by the
ripples at the surface. His doppelgänger stared up, but instead of the deep
brown eyes he was born with, these eyes looked back in the same red
shades he was now haunted by.
His head, still heavy with chaos, fell back with his eyes turned to the
stars. A howl of anguish resounded through the trees of the bayou. Nothing
was his anymore. Not his eyes. Not his body. Not even his will.
Memories crept in.
His mind slipped into the shameful past. Instead of blood, skin flooded
his vision. Flawless, pale, soft skin pressed along his. Sweat beaded
