London 1897
Wolf and Tabitha sat together, eating breakfast but barely speaking or
even eating. Neither had much appetite. Despite the silence, the meal was
companionable. The new earl and the late earl’s young wife, respectively,
had been housemates for not even two months. Initially, Tabitha had
considered it a temporary arrangement while she helped the new earl adjust
to his unexpected inheritance of the title and the large household that came
with it. However, they had recently agreed on a more permanent
arrangement.
For the most part, this arrangement pleased Tabitha, but sometimes she
questioned the wisdom of her decision. She wasn’t sure what was more
disconcerting, the thought of one day being supplanted as the lady of the
household when Wolf married or her growing feelings towards him.
Because while she had tried to deny it for many weeks, she could no longer
ignore the butterflies in her stomach whenever she was in his company.
This wasn’t how she had felt when she was first courted by her deceased
husband, Jonathan, Wolf’s cousin. She had been barely out then and in the
middle of her season, a young, guileless innocent. Jonathan’s attentions had
flattered her and delighted her parents, more to the point. Jonathan had been
an earl and extremely wealthy, a highly eligible match in every way. A
naive young debutante, Tabitha had been caught up in the romance of it all
and her parents’ pride, so rarely directed towards her previously.
But with Wolf, it was different.
He treated her as an equal, and he
respected her intelligence. Perhaps more importantly, he was kind; she
could never imagine him raising his fists at her like Jonathan had done
many times. And despite having a slightly disreputable roguish air about
him, thanks to his frequent beard stubble and refusal to keep his hair to a
fashionable length, he was an undeniably very attractive man. That beard
stubble somehow only highlighted a rugged jawline, and his heavily lashed,
brilliant blue eyes, shaped like a cat’s and high cheekbones, made for a very
handsome face.
Wolf was tall, with broad shoulders. He refused to wear a jacket in the
house and usually compounded that sin by rolling up his shirtsleeves.
Tabitha had many opportunities to appreciate his well-muscled arms.
Tabitha and Wolf had successfully solved a murder investigation together
a little more than a week before. Rather than settle back into a normal
household routine, they’d almost immediately been catapulted into another
investigation by Tabitha’s erstwhile mother-in-law, the Dowager Countess
of Pembroke. Truthfully, Tabitha hadn’t been included in the dowager’s
demands for help; only Wolf, “dear Jeremy,” had been. But Tabitha was
sure Wolf was under no illusions that she would be left out.
