Lori twisted the stem of her water glass between her fingers, imagining it
was John’s neck.
He was late.
Again.
A quick glance at her watch did little to lighten her mood. The show was
about to start and once it did no one was allowed in. The night out had been
all John’s idea so he should have been early.
Let’s go to that circus everyone’s always talking about. I’ve been so busy
lately. I want to make it up to you.
He was doing a crap job of making it up to her. Sure, she had been a bit
excited about going, but more than that she had wanted John to at least
seem like he cared enough about her to finish work on time.
It had been a miracle that they’d managed to get seats at all. Circus
Mirage, with its mixture of magic, illusion and spectacle, was always sold
out. Always. Couples’ night even more so. Even if he didn’t particularly

want to see the show, John would at least like the bragging rights it would
give him.
So, where the hell was he?
She looked around the arena. Maybe he had come in a different entrance?
Instead of the usual rows of seats, it was lined with tables set for two –
complete with red satin tablecloths, crystal wine glasses and single white
roses in delicate glass vases. Lit by small tea lights in tulip-shaped red orbs
of glass, the circumference of the giant tent glowed and flickered as if filled
with hundreds of red fireflies.
Red fireflies and canoodling couples.
Of course, John had purchased the most romantic seats in the house –
ringside, dead center. She would have preferred somewhere more discreet,
where every other couple couldn’t see her, sitting by herself. Without a
partner, without John. The show was due to start in five minutes.
She would give him four.
She straightened in her seat and sipped her water. A woman at the next
table watched her with a mixture of pity and embarrassment. Lori smiled as
she pressed redial, shook her head and mouthed, “late again.”
“Yes?” John’s irritated voice snapped out of the phone and made her
jump. “You’re late. They’re about to start.”
“Lori? Shit. Sorry. Something came up.” A woman’s giggle sounded
behind John’s voice.
“Again?” She hated the disappointment that weighed down her chest. He
didn’t deserve it, not this time.
“I’ll make it up to you tomorrow. Promise.”
“Don’t bother. You said that the last time, the time before that and the
time before that.”
“But it’ll be different this time.”
“Yeah, it will. This time I won’t give you another chance. It’s over.”
