Legs aching from so much walking, feet throbbing inside old, hard
sneakers, head exploding from so much hot sun, dry mouth from thirst, and
soft body from exhaustion: that’s the sum of my day. With heavy eyes and
skin sticky in dry sweat, I turn the key in the lock. Finally I arrived. Finally,
at home. But what I see is as discouraging, or more so, than the image which,
against my will, I am compelled to face in the mirror hanging in front of the
door. An image that steals my attention for looking terrible, myself.
The pale skin could frighten even alien residents of sunless planets. When
was the last time I went to the beach? My long, dark brown hair looks
terrible, since for weeks I have not known what a conditioner is and have
been using kitchen detergent to wash them. The almost black circles around
my eyes, which were very poorly disguised by a cheap concealer in the
morning, come back to life, after hours of sweating and walking on foot,
melting my skin, my makeup and my strength of spirit.
Barefoot, I take the worn-out bag off my shoulder and leave it on the chair
next to the door. I shake my head negatively and try to push away my disgust
with myself. It’s not your fault, Eliza! It’s not your fault! Tomorrow will be
better than today and then it will be better than tomorrow! You just need
faith!
My stomach growls and I twist my lips in disgust, already anticipating
what I will find in the kitchen. Five steps is enough to cross the tiny distance
between the door of the house and the refrigerator. All my glorious space has
only one room that, at the end, houses every one of them: bedroom, living
room, kitchen, bathroom and service area. It’s almost like going back to
childhood, when I imagined that a cardboard box was Barbie’s castle, only
now I joke about imagining that this cubicle is the home of my dreams.
The way things are going, as much as hopeful I may be able to maintain
myself, the improbability that one day I may have this home remains the
same, very high. Living in São Paulo costs an arm and a leg, one that I can’t
afford. The worst-kept secret in human history? I’m broke! Absolutely and
completely. Not a dime in my pocket, nothing on my bank account, under the
mattress or in the back of the wardrobe.
In fact, not one of these I have anymore, I sold two months ago and have
been storing my few butt cloths in cardboard boxes. Debts? Oh, those I
have! Lots, lots of debts! Overdraft, I don’t know how many credit cards, on
the bakery on the corner and the neighborhood grocery store. And let’s not
forget Mr. Luiz’ dive bar, the last resort of the desperate.
