MEHER
A Fairy Tale Princess with a Feisty Spirit…
That’s what people think of me. Well, they can’t always be right, can
they? I’m so much more than their eyes can see, their minds can judge and
their hearts can feel. But alas, nothing else comes to their mind when they see
me walking in the shadows of my family—the politically acclaimed Walia
family. My grandfather was a freedom fighter who fought for our country’s
independence. My father, Pratap Walia, continued that legacy forward and is
now the Deputy Chief Minister of the state, but with the changing dynamics
of politics in the past decade, it’s hard to tell if my father is on the right side
of the fence or wrong. But he is my father, and I trust him. I know his
decisions will always be for the betterment of the country’s democracy. If
only I had the proof of the same to convince my heart. I’ve seen and read
articles about him, branding him as a corrupt politician. A few articles have
blamed him for taking bribes from the country’s business magnates to do
their bidding. While I have ignored this gossip till now, it is at times like
these, where I see him talking and laughing merrily with these corrupt
politicians of his party, that makes me wonder if I’ve truly known him.
“Hello, Meher.” The deep, manly voice from behind me interrupts my
chain of thoughts.

I turn around to face him. A good-looking man dressed in an off-white
sherwani and a maroon scarf wrapped around his neck stares back at me. I am
here to attend Priya Chahal’s wedding with my family. Priya is the only
daughter of one of the Ministers of the ruling political party—National Ekta
Party (NEP). Her father has a good business and personal relationship with
my father.

“Hi, I am Niraj.” He extends his arm for a handshake. I sigh, shaking my
head in denial, recalling how he constantly stared at me ever since I came to
this wedding party. The man has the guts to approach me, or should I say he
is ignorant about whose daughter I am.

“Hi and Bye. Please leave me alone if you want to get home unscathed. If
my family sees you talking to me, they’ll not be sweet to you,” I warn him
before turning away to go to the buffet table.
“Wow,” he chuckles. “I have heard many things about you, but I didn’t
know you are funny too.”

I roll my eyes, turning back to him.
“You know what’s the biggest difference between the old and new
generation, Niraj?”
He shrugs.

“The older generation takes everything seriously, even a few things that
they shouldn’t, like causal friendships between a girl and a boy. While the
new generation doesn’t take anything seriously—even when you shout the
truth from the rooftops. You ignored my warning, thinking it was funny.
Believe me, there was no humour when I asked you to leave me alone. You
don’t know my family.”
