Miya
I was lying on the bed reading when Mom suddenly throws open my
bedroom door screaming, “Get up, hurry!”
“Why, what’s going on?”
“I have no time to tell you right now. We have to leave here in no less than
ten minutes. Take this bag and put whatever you can’t live without in it.”
“Mom, you are talking in riddles.”

She grabs my arm. “Listen, Miya, you are never coming back here again.
Now get your ass up and pack this bag quickly. I have a few things I need to
gather for you.” I just stand here. “Please, baby, just humor me.”
“Mom, I can’t put my whole life in this backpack. Where in the Hell are we
going?”

“I’ll tell you more in the car, and make it work because that’s all the room
you’ll have.” She stops before walking out the door,… Turning back
towards me for a second. “I would probably roll up a couple of extra pairs
of panties, throw in some tampons, and don’t forget your toothbrush. Layer
the clothes you have on so you will have a few changes on you. This will
also give you more room in that bag. Make sure to grab your favorite
pictures off the vanity mirror, and whatever else you can’t live without, but
do it now.”

She rushes back out of the room and I know I’m just standing here with my
mouth open. “What in the living hell is going on?” I yell out.
I look around my room and my mind goes blank for a second. “Ok,” I start
talking to myself. “I will need…Chapstick for sure, as Mom said, panties
are a must, hair scrunchies, maybe some Tylenol, and I’m not leaving the
house without my eyeliner.” I grab my favorite stuffed animal and tie it to
the front of the bag. Then I tuck my Kindle in the side pocket.

Opening up my jewelry box, I start to pull out Grandma’s watch, only to
stop and put the entire box in the bottom of the backpack. Grandma had this
made for me when I was little, and even as an adult, it’s still one of my
favorite things. The silver box has my name engraved across the top and a
tiny ballerina spins around inside when you open the lid. I can’t imagine
leaving it behind. I yank all the pictures off the mirror on the vanity, grab
my multi-charger out of the wall, and my cell phone. It’s amazing how all
the things you can’t live without really reduce in number when you only
have a single bag to put them in.

I run into the closet, pulling a few of my favorite hoodies on top of the
others. Then I shimmy on a pair of jeans over my leggings. I feel like that
kid in the movie Christmas Story as I layer my clothes… before long, I
won’t be able to put my arms down.
