RAZ
Ihug each of my brothers firmly and try to make light of what’s coming,
that is, until I get to Father. I struggle like a youngling fighting back the
tears when Father’s strong arms grasp around me tightly. After a moment, I
push away from him and make myself walk up the ramp. I can’t say another
word or I’m going to fall apart right here. I turn back looking at each of them,
saving this scene in my head to pull strength from in the future and the
numerous years ahead that I will be alone. Standing on the ramp of the
Traveler as the door closes is one of the hardest things I have ever done. Red
tears flow down my face as I watch Father struggle… with letting me go. I
will never forget the look on his face when he told me, I am not willing to
lose a son just to save my father. It’s hard to contemplate that this may be the
very last time I ever lay eyes on my father or any of my brothers. If I succeed
it will be a glorious day. If I fail… well then, I let everyone down.
I don’t know how much arguing I would have done to be honest, about
being the one sent on this mission, if it hadn’t been for Katherine. I have been
on hundreds of assignments, but none of them have been as important to me
as this one.
The moment that transmission came through and I laid eyes on her… my
whole world shifted. I went from being the family jokester to a male on a
mission. The what’s, why’s, or even how’s have racked my brain ever since.
It’s absolutely amazing how fate ties our lives together.
The first moment they started twisting my family up in their plans for
tomorrow was when …My grandfather Tyberius left Darverius on a routine
council mission, he boarded a space cruiser and simply disappeared.
Grandfather and six of our elders … gone…not a single trace of them
anywhere.
My father, being his only son, never stopped searching. I asked him one
day when I was little why he was still looking for him. Father told me, he
knew in his heart that his father was alive somewhere and then he asked me
how long would I look if it was him?
I remember standing up as tall as I could which was about to his waist at
the time and telling him, ‘I would never stop!’
He kneeled down and pulled me into a huge hug, then whispered, Now
you understand… Remember son, we never forsake or forget the ones we love
because, in the end, their love is all the Lord of the Light will allow us to take
with us when we leave this world.
