B R I T T A NY
Eight freaking days! I have been in the back of this truck looking out of a
five-inch window and we are still hundreds of miles from home. My Dad
got a phone call late one night from his sister. Her husband passed away and
she wanted to move back home to Ohio from California. She asked Father if
he would help load up and pull a U-Haul back for her; doesn’t sound all that
bad when you’re on the phone. It’s a work vacation, make a few extra dollars,
and get to see a few things on the way, what could possibly go wrong?
When they first got that phone call, I wanted to stay home. After all, I just
turned seventeen. I’m plenty old enough to stay home alone, and it’s not like
this would be the first time they left me by myself, but Mom wouldn’t hear of
it. I don’t know if she didn’t want to be alone with Dad that long, or if she
really thought this was going to be quite the adventure. After days of begging
her, I finally gave up and decided to make the best of it. I actually got
somewhat excited before we left. There were so many things we were going
to get to see. Oh, how naive I was. So far, I have seen rocks, dirt, semi-trucks,
snakes, and more rocks.

We have been driving nonstop for days now and at this very moment, I
think we are out here driving around for the hell of it. I flop back down on the
bed. Sweat beads on my forehead as I bake in the intense heat that’s beating
down on top of this metal camper top. So far, there has been no wow factor
on this trip. As a matter of fact, it’s been damn miserable right from the start.

Father’s 1976 Ford F-150 is orange, and I don’t mean the pretty kind
either. You know it’s that kind of vehicle that you don’t want to go to the
prom in! We are so wealthy—NOT—that Father even fixed the truck up a
little before we took off. He added this stylish camper top with some top-
grade duct tape. Now, he did paint the duct tape orange, trying to hide the
holes in the body, and don’t get too impressed with the cardboard taped to a
front window, that right there screams ‘broke rednecks’. Father even built a
u-shaped couch-slash-bed in the back of the truck for us all to sleep on. The
only positive so far is, thank God, no one knows me out here. Because we
look like a bunch of homeless people every time we crawl in or out of this
truck.
