those who read Sage’s story, that book is set in the future, after this
story. Sage is still at Hollister for this story.
D H down the bar one last time, then threw his towel
into the dirty towel bin. He’d wash them tomorrow before the bar opened.
But tonight, now that his sister’s surprise engagement party had ended, he
had someone waiting for him.
Walking back to the office to grab his keys, he smiled as he thought
about her. Melody was one of the few women he’d been with more than
once. He’d been with her more than any woman he’d hooked up with. She
was a sexy, fun, wild thing, and no one else measured up. Hell, he’d even
considered a run at a monogamous relationship for her, but she’d let him
know up front that what they were doing was for fun only.
Fun was good for him. Not exactly what he wanted anymore, but he’d
take it. As he grabbed the keys from his desk and tossed them into the air,
the jingle of bells at the front door made him frown and hustle back to the
main part of the bar. The town was tucked in for the night. Hell, the
boardwalks outside the buildings rolled themselves up by ten o’clock on the
weekend. Whoever was there probably wasn’t local.
The stranger standing at the bar confirmed his suspicion. “Hey, we’re
closing, but I can get you a beer,” Declan said, making a point to look at his
watch. “Fifteen minutes, then I have to head out.”
The man stared at him before shaking his head. “I’m looking for Declan
Howard.”
A tendril of uneasiness trickled down his spine. “Yeah? What do you
need with him?”
The man spun to look at the bar before turning back to Declan. “Do you
know him?”
“Better than anyone else.”
“Do you think he’d be interested in selling the bar?” The stranger
leaned against the bar and stared at him.
Declan made a show of thinking before shaking his head. “This here bar
is his primary income. I don’t think he’d sell.” Declan wouldn’t get rid of
the Bit and Spur if offered a million dollars. His little bar was his
connection to the town and its people. Hell, he wouldn’t even know what to
do with a million dollars. Not like he could ranch or anything. He liked
animals, but he didn’t want to ranch. It wasn’t in his blood like it was in the
people around here.
“Do you know when he’ll be in?” the stranger asked. “I’d like to ask
him for myself.”
“Tomorrow. He’s here every day.” Declan leaned against the back bar.
“Pretty sure you’d be wasting your time.”
The man rolled his eyes. “I’ll take that up with the owner.” He knocked
on the bar with one fist and walked out. Declan sized him up as he exited.
