Grant had wondered all winter long whether or not he had made a
mistake proposing to Miss White.
He had spent the winter and spring with little appetite, wondering
what exactly he had gotten himself into. He’d been engaged once before,
and it hadn’t ended happily. He could only wonder if this engagement was
destined for the same fate.

He had been dreading the houseparty last fall and certainly hadn’t had
any matrimonial intentions upon arrival. Then, on the second to last day of
the houseparty, he found himself on one knee.

In the months since he’d secured her hand, he tried to make sense of
it. He tried so hard to reason his way to a logical motivation for his
marriage proposal.
The truth was, there was none.

He paused in front of the White’s townhome to take it in.
The weather was starting to warm. Summer had started to elbow
spring out of the way in the last week.
The White’s townhome was in a good neighborhood. Typically it was
occupied by people like Lord Grey—that is, titled families with wealth.
He had known Miss White’s father was rich, but he hadn’t realized
the extent. He had assumed she was such an upcoming object of interest for
herself, not for wealth.

The door opened and Miss White stepped out of the house and then
froze when she saw him standing at the end of their walk.
Had she really not known he was arriving today?
“My mother must have been watching for you,” Miss White said,
coming down the steps. “I thought it was strange that she insisted I step
outside to check the weather.”
Grant stepped up to her while she was speaking. Her cheeks were
tinted pink from embarrassment. She was wearing a light blue dress that
drew attention to her eyes. Grant reached forward and took her hand in his.
She hadn’t even made any move to offer it. He pressed a kiss to the back of
her hand.

Calm rushed over him immediately. All of his doubts about her had
been vanquished by the mere sight of her. He wondered how she managed
that.
He looked up to see her blushing, and felt his own cheeks get a little
warmer. “It is good to see you again.”
“You as well,” Miss White returned. Her eyes were darting from him
to the front door. “I have to warn you before we go inside, my sisters are
ecstatic about having a future brother-in-law.”
“Oh, um …” Grant berated himself. He hadn’t said ‘um’ in years.
Good Lord. He was supposed to make a good impression.

“These are probably the only moments we’ll get to ourselves,” Miss
White said. “Is there anything you would like to discuss away from
everyone else?”
He had thought a lot about her in the months since they had seen one
another. He supposed that was common as someone with a fiancée. But her
beauty had faded in his mind.
She was breathtaking.
