ZEYNA
In the shadowed alcove, Zeyna could hear the rhythmic thumps of feet
against stone. Fae waiting to see her cross blades with another human,
waiting to see her spill blood, waiting to see her make the other submit.
Zeyna knelt over the sand, rubbing it between her palms. She ought to
be ashamed that the mere sound quickened her blood. But the truth was,
there was no shame. She did what she had to in order to survive. The
challenge of matching her iron will against that of another was enthralling,
and in a world where she served and existed only at the whims of others,
she took what little pleasure she could.
The shadows darkened as another entered her alcove.
“Are you ready?”
Zeyna let the sand fall back to the ground, releasing a small cloud of
dust. Once the smell bothered her, but like everything else, she’d gotten
used to it. She turned to face her master.
Nura stood in the shadows of the two Fae feeling smaller than ever. The one
who killed her mother spoke in a soft voice that was persistent, but
submissive. The other Fae, a stiff woman with moon-white hair dressed in
rich blue silk, glanced at her. Her gaze was studious, like she was weighing
Nura’s worth.
Nura’s mother told her once of pirates who sailed the seas, who would
steal others and sell them as slaves. That’s what Nura was now. A slave. But
to what end, she did not know.
The Fae woman nodded to something the Fae man said and brushed
him aside.
“My name is Cassia,” the woman said. “What is yours?”
“Nura,” she responded in a soft voice.
“I hear you are smart. Is that true?”
Nura stayed quiet.
Cassia lifted an eyebrow. “Do you know why you have been brought to
Morswen?”
“To be sold as a slave,” Nura said.
“No. To be bought as a champion.”
Champion? That lifted Nura’s chin. “What do you mean?”
“A champion is someone who will fight on their court’s behalf to ensure
that they are protected.”
“I cannot fight,” Nura said. That had always been Miran’s talent.
“I didn’t ask you if you could fight. I asked if you were smart.”
“No,” Nura said immediately.
Cassia leaned in and studied Nura more closely. Then she smirked.
“Clever enough not to say yes, huh? That will do.” She glanced at the Fae
man, “I’ll take her. I can train her to fight.”
The Fae man nodded.
“One last thing,” Cassia said, turning back to Nura. “You will need a
new name.”
“But I like my name,” Nura said, her bottom lip trembling.
“Your past will weigh you down, Champion. It will be the death of you.
You will have a new name, one tied to the greatness of your future.”
“I—”
“You may pick your name, should you like,” Cassia said. “Or I will pick
one for you.”
Nura thought for a moment of all the names she’d ever heard. Pressure
mounted and she wondered how her mother ever picked one for her.
