Three more hours. Three more hours. I repeat those words in my head,
staring at the whiteboard in front of me. I inhale a deep breath just as
another paper airplane comes whizzing past my ear, crashing into the
whiteboard and falling to the ground next to my heel. It’s pretty symbolic of
the state of my classroom right now, which is utterly chaotic.
“Whoops. Sorry, Miss C!” Brady Heinz huffs out as he rushes past me
in a blur, grabbing his airplane on the way. The classroom is loud and
buzzing with excitement. My second-graders are fully enjoying our end-ofthe-year party.
Alright, I’ll admit, I’m enjoying it, too—I love my students and our
daily life at school. I’m just also desperately in need of that clock to turn to
2:15 p.m. so I can pack up my things and officially close the door on this
school year. The excitement of summer has already started and has been
buzzing for the past few weeks, actually. It’s time to put the kids—and
myself, if I’m honest—out of our misery and let them loose for the summer.
Three more hours.
“Okay, friends, find your seats, please!”
A few children find their seats immediately, while others are dragging
their feet like I just asked them to walk the plank or something, but
honestly, I can relate. I’m over the rules and structure of daily school life,
too. I need summer break just as much as my kids do at this point. We’re all
mentally checked out, just going through the motions to finish out the day
as best we can.
“I know it’s the last day of school, but we still need to be good listeners
and follow the rules,” I remind them.
Millie Bradley nods her head in agreement, hands neatly folded across
her desk, while Jackson Peters is the last one to find his seat, which is par
for the course for him. He drops down with a sigh, slouching in his chair,
his mouth twisting up in an annoyed smirk.
He’s been one of the most challenging students I’ve had so far in my
three years of teaching. He’s a good kid overall, but he lacks discipline at
home, which ultimately carries over into the classroom—constantly being
defiant against school procedures and expectations, pushing back on
everything I say, seeing what he can get away with. He’s needed a good
dose of tough love and clear boundaries this year, which I have had no
problem with and happily gave him.
I find my stride as a teacher when I need to put a little extra thought into
the best way to get through to a student. We’ve had an interesting dynamic
this year, Jackson and I. After quite a bit of back and forth and several
behavior interventions, we’ve settled into a comfortable, co-existing,
teacher-student relationship. I try my best to advance his education in a
subtle, non-confrontational way, while he tones down his behavior, rarely
causing a widespread classroom disruption anymore like he did in the fall.
