FREEDOM IS ONLY five months away.
“I’ve got this,” I say to no one, having just slammed the door shut a
little too forcefully.
I shouldn’t take my frustration out on my trusty SUV or the gas station
hazelnut coffee I am precariously balancing between my thighs, but to my
surprise, it doesn’t slosh out on me. Considering how this day has started,
I’ll count it as a win.
My frustrations are largely aimed at my infuriating parents for throwing
me a party that ultimately kept me up all night. And may very well cause
me to be late to my last day of my internship.
The party, which I made crystal clear I absolutely did not want in the
first place, started off as a We’re So Proud Of You! celebration, but quickly
turned into a What In The World Are You Thinking? nightmare.
You would think I’m a wayward youth scheming to run away, but
instead I’m a twenty-three-year-old woman stoked about accepting an offer
for my dream job. Which just so conveniently happens to be a couple
thousand miles away from my overbearing and controlling parents.
That is, after I finish this internship and complete my last semester of
Park Ranger Law Enforcement Academy Training.
While my infuriating parents drive me crazy with their opinionated
thoughts about what I should or shouldn’t do with my life, I did inherit my
love of nature from them. When I was a kid we would routinely go fishing,
geocaching, and hiking each weekend. That was when I was genuinely
happy. I became more comfortable outdoors than I did sitting in a classroom
full of kids who talked non-stop about video games, or crushing on the
latest “it” singer. Having nothing in common with the other children, I spent
most of my time admiring the nature around me and learning all I could
about it. I was fascinated by everything that surrounded me. When I turned
ten, my parents took our family on a cross country road trip visiting all the
National Parks, and I was curious about the people in uniform I saw around.
As my parents explained they worked there, my world shifted. I could work
surrounded by nature everyday? Since that day, it’s been my dream to work
at one of our National Parks. The untouched beauty, the quiet, the newness
from one day to the next, the freedom to roam. The freedom to be myself..
Shifting the gear of my 4Runner into drive, I rush to the Ranger Station
before I’m late for our daily morning roundup. I have been a perfect intern
all summer long, so of course, on my last day, I forget to wear my uniform,
am sporting yesterday’s makeup, and packing a lunchable I was
overcharged for at the gas station.
Maybe if the stars align, I will be able to go on a solo assignment today.
I could even settle for having a day full of Ross and Isaac giving grief at
this rare glimpse at me being a hot mess. Minus the “hot” part.
