Scarla
When Zaden emerges from the Howling Cat, I’m leaning against a building
across the street with my arms folded over my chest for maximum pissedoff energy.
His piercing green eyes light up when he sees me, but he covers the
burst of joy with a frown.
He comes straight to me, checking up and down the dingy street. “You
shouldn’t be here.”
I fist his black shirt in both hands and pull him close, bruising my lips
against his. “What in hells below do you think you’re doing?” I retort. “You
rescued me from those attacking angels yesterday and saw me safely back
to the Rim, and then you disappeared. You told me you’d be right back, but
you never came.”
“It’s not safe for you to be near me. The demon is coming to reclaim its
blood debt, and it snacks on mortals, in case you hadn’t noticed.”
His black shirt is still fisted in my hands. I release him and shove him
backward. “Bullshit. I am stronger than you, angel boy. I have the dyad of
power, remember? All you have is a little strength and a touch of magic.”
He puts his hands on his hips, taking up my entire field of vision. “I also
have immortality. The demon can’t kill me. It can only hurt me.”
“You don’t know that. You don’t know anything about it. Maybe its
fangs are tipped in celestial steel, you don’t fucking know.”
He grins wickedly, and I’m struck anew by how damn sexy this male is.
His full smiling lips are distracting. How did I ever get so lucky? Still, that
doesn’t mean I’ll let him get away with anything.
“I know one thing about them,” he says, teasing me with information.
I refuse to snap at his information bait, so I just arch an eyebrow and
wait him out.
His wicked smile deepens. “I know how to kill them.”
My pulse bursts into life. “You do? How?”
He closes the distance between us and cages me in his arms against the
wall. “First, I need some answers from you. How did you find me here?”
I grin. “You’re not the only one with contacts. Bwadu told me the most
respected oracle in all of Aubia operates out of this tavern, so I figured this
is where you’d be.” I glance at the decrepit building across the street. “I
guess this place is a good cover.”
“It’s not a cover. She’s a drunk.”
I place a hand on his cheek, feeling his jaw work as he talks. “Good, so
I don’t have to be jealous of her?”
He growls and leans forward, his breath warming my ear. “You don’t
have to be jealous of anyone.”
My pulse quickens. His forest-lily scent is infused with tobacco smoke,
and his muscled chest and shoulder take up my entire view. I run a hand
over his pectoral muscle and circle his erect nipple. “So, are you going to
tell me how to kill the demon, or do I need to go and see the nice oracle
myself?”
He chuckles. “I wouldn’t inflict that on anyone.”
