MOLLY
Once my divorce was final, I packed my things. I stood in the front hall
afterward, realizing how few possessions I had compared to Tyler. Only
three boxes after ten years of marriage.
Plus one teardrop blue stone I wore strung on a simple chain about my
neck, all I had left of the baby I’d lost before I could deliver her a year ago.
“I’ll help you put them in your vehicle,” Tyler said, his face stoic as
always. I imagined it would loosen up after I’d left.
He left Bridgette’s side, striding to the front door.
I did my best not to notice her softly bulging belly. He’d barely waited six
months after I lost our daughter, Sara, before planting a new child in someone
else.
“I can handle it,” I said.
Since I had no place to go, he’d lived with Bridgette until I could “get my
feet under me”. Now that the divorce was final, however, I had to move out.
The house and everything inside it legally belonged to my wealthy ex. Per
our prenup, I got a small stipend that would be just enough to rent an
apartment, though not enough to eat or buy myself a new pair of shoes.
It was okay. I could get a job.
Lifting a box, I propped it on my hip, then grabbed my bag of clothing.
“You can get the door for me, Tyler. Maybe place the other boxes out on the
stoop? I’ll put these inside my hovercar,” mine being a generous way to
describe the rental, “then come back for the other two.”
“Don’t be like that,” he snapped, “I’ll take them to your hovercar.”
So generous.
Bridgette released a shrill laugh, quickly cutting it off with a hand slapped
over her mouth.
In the past, I would’ve strode right up to him, poked him in the chest, and
told him I could be any way I pleased. Now, I just gave him one of those
looks that made him squirm. I didn’t have much else I could use to defend
myself.
Outside, I shivered in the chilly winter air, taking care on the walk not to
slip.
Tyler followed me with the final boxes stacked in his arms, leaving
Bridgette inside the house. He opened the trunk of the small hovercar and
lowered my few possessions inside. “What do you plan to do?”
“You know me. I always bounce back. I’ve got a new job lined up, and
I’ll start that soon.”
