The Gifted Realm
RAINER LAWSON – AGE 20
“He’s gonna kill us!” Logan Haydenshire panicked as both he and
Rainer hit the thick blue mat of the Venton Gifted Academy Gym
with a hard slap of their bodies under the intense shield cast. The
stench of sweat and gym socks combined with the force of the hit
threatened to make Rainer vomit.

He shook his head. “He’s not allowed to kill us.”
“Has anyone told him that?”
Rainer gritted his teeth. He had to get up. This was it. This was what
he’d wanted since he was old enough to know what National Elite Iodex
was. He and Logan had worked too hard, they’d studied too long, they’d
worked their asses off for this day, and he wasn’t going to let the
opportunity slip through his aching hands.

“Come on, Lawson, if you want something fight for it,” Dan Vindico,
the Chief of Elite Iodex, urged them on despite the fact that for this duel he
was their opponent.
Rainer dragged himself back up. Sweat poured down his face. Dammit,
he was better than this. He was the Venton Academy Head of Ioses Order
for his graduating class. He was Joseph Lawson’s son. He could do this.
He summoned and cast his shield out at who he sincerely prayed after
this match would become his and Logan’s boss. The fact that Vindico
looked both amused and bored did nothing to bolster his badly bruised ego.
Logan joined his shield cast with Rainer’s. Okay, this was good. Dan
Vindico was an incredibly rare Double-Predilect of equal Gift. So, two on
one seemed fair in this scenario.

The gym glowed in fierce green energy. Vindico chuckled. Rainer and
Logan advanced and pushed their combined shields toward him. Suddenly,
Vindico summoned his fierce shield with both hands and drew them apart.
Crackles of protective energy sizzled between his hands.
“Oh shit,” Logan whispered. “I’ve seen Garrett do that before.”
Vindico projected and harnessed their combined shields. He siphoned
the energy out of their casts. Once he’d pulled more than half of their
combined energy into his own massive, muscle-bound body, he projected
the cast back out, and once again Rainer and Logan hit the mat hard.
