They say you never forget your first love, but a twelve-year-old girl kissing
a thirteen-year-old boy during a random game of Spin the Bottle probably
isn’t what “they” had in mind. Especially when the kiss happened by the
light of a neon lava lamp and amongst the nervous giggles of a circle of
seventh graders. Hardly an earth-shattering romantic moment in time, right?
So, why was I still daydreaming about that kiss fifteen years later?

Granted, in the time of braces, friendship bracelets and training bras, it
made sense the kiss would stand out as an important rite of passage, but a
logical girl would’ve moved on, shared fabulous kisses with other boys and
forgotten about that boy. She wouldn’t be silly enough, delusional enough,
and sentimental enough to do something stupid like fall in love after one
kiss.

Yet that’s exactly what I did.
It didn’t matter that he never asked me out or showed a hint of romantic
interest in me afterward. Or that after our monumental (to me) kiss, he’d
merely exchanged fist bumps with his buddies and never again
acknowledged the smooch that had worked its way into my heart.
I, Claire Davenport, fell in love with Alex Murphy that day. As a quiet
math and science geek, he wasn’t your typical girl-crush, but his sweet kiss
had made me melt.

To this day, I still think about him. Oh, not as the thirteen-year-old boy I
knew back then. Or even as the high school senior I last saw in person
during our high school graduation. No, nowadays, I envision him as the
scientist he is today, the one featured in a Blue Moon Bay Beat article about
some scientific award he’d won.

The photo next to the article showed that the cute boy had become a
very handsome man (in a geeky-scientist way). His eyes were a lighter
brown than I remembered and his lashes were darker. But his full mouth
looked so familiar I could almost feel those lips against mine and not as a
twelve-year-old girl playing Spin the Bottle. I pictured myself with him as
he was now, a full-grown man, who would still whisper “close your eyes”
before he pressed his mouth to mine.
