17 YEAR LATER
The myriad sounds and smells of the hospital batter my
heightened senses as I walk into the emergency department.
The fluorescent artificial lighting above me irritates my eyes,
and the whining and whirring of the multitude of machines make it difficult
to focus on what the portly, sweating man in front of me is trying to tell me
as he flags me down. Don’t even get me started on the various scents and
odours that are overwhelming my enhanced sense of smell. It may be early
in the morning, but it’s still just as busy here.

It’s enough to make most
shifters turn tail and run, excuse the pun. But not me: I work as a nurse in
A&E – or the emergency department, as the Americans call it. I have lived
here for six years now and I still can’t seem to lose my Briticisms. I love
working here. Well, human-Ari does. I can feel wolf-Ari cringing at the
assault on our senses. She has been getting more and more agitated
recently; it has been too long since we last shifted.

It’s dangerous for a shifter to ignore their inner animal for too long.
Suppressing these instincts tends to have disastrous consequences, both for
the shifter and those who happen to be too close. Thankfully this is rare but,
working as a nurse, I have seen my fair share of rogue shifter injuries. Not
that humans are privy to this kind of knowledge – they only know them as
unfortunate and horrendous muggings.

Even now I can feel my wolf eyeing
up the man in front of me, my eyes wandering to his neck where I can see
his pulse fluttering away like a startled rabbit under his skin. He would be
easy prey. Having consumed one too many pies, he would be slow, and he
would be no match for my superior strength… I shake my head to get rid of
these thoughts and force a smile at him instead, pretending I know what he
has been going on about. These humans are so slow to communicate what
they want, like they have all the time in the world. All I would need to do is
to jump forward and snap his neck and, bang, life over.

Now, now, Ari, stop looking at the nice humans as prey, I scold myself.
That would be a spectacular way to lose my job and reveal the existence of
shifters to the human world. Not to mention being hauled in by ASP – the
Allied Supernatural Protectors, who are our version of the police. They
govern us and make sure we keep the peace and, most importantly, don’t
reveal ourselves to the humans. I have a good setup here; I’m not prepared
to blow my cover by going feral.
