AMANDA
Have a nice day!” I tell the barista behind the counter, waving her off
with a smile. With the coffee cup secured in one hand and a bag of
muffins in the other, I step out of the shop and keep the door open with my
hip for the next patron to enter.
He doesn’t thank me, but that’s commonplace in a city as big as this
one. People are so absorbed in their own lives that they see nothing else
around them. Not that there’s much to see. The big city life is anything but
glamorous.

I dodge a puddle in the middle of the causeway, my square heels clickclacking on the cement. Glancing up, I search for a slash of sky amid the
towering skyscrapers, but only gray clouds greet me. Another day like this.
We were supposed to be in spring, with blue skies, flowers, and bees.
A florist is on my right. I glance inside the store at the multitude of reds
and yellows. This is the only chance I have of seeing flowers in this city, or
at least around my neighborhood and downtown, the only places I go.
When you’re working nine to five with so many extra hours, it’s difficult to
make time to chase flowers.

Jack could have given me flowers. He works less than I do, and he has
much more money. I mean, he owns his condo here in downtown, and the
company was a present from his father. He drives expensive cars—never
the same two days in a row.

I chew on the inside of my cheeks as I stop at a crossing. Some would
say I had quite a catch in my hands. I disagree.
Jack’s almost forty to my twenty-one years old. I didn’t mind the
difference that much, but it became a central point of discussion later in our
“relationship”. The quotes are necessary. He detested being tied down by
society’s constraints, meaning he never wanted to tell anyone we were
together.

I shake my head as I cross the street; the sound of traffic and
construction is a background noise I’m too used to. Together. Only I
thought we were together. Though Jack’s my boss and much older, I
relished in his attention. I relished in how his eyes would skate over my
curves, hunger on his face.
