SAXON
The screaming in my head tries to drown out the silence, but it’s futile. It’s as if
my lips are sewn shut with a fishhook and barbed wire. Not even a whimper
has a chance at escaping. All I can do is get lost in the darkness. My
fingernails are ripped from my skin as I drag them down the wall—his
blood on my hands leaving behind evidence of my touch. It’s piercingly loud
and deadly quiet all at the same time, and I know with certainty that I’d
rather burn alive than live one more moment like this.
A Few Months Earlier
A cool breeze blows through my long, black hair as I walk through
campus. They say that on your twenty-first birthday, you feel different.
More grown up. Ready to take on the world of adulthood. Personally, that’s
not the way I’d describe it.
My mom would say that I’m an old soul—that I’ve always been wise
beyond my years and it’s no surprise that twenty-one feels the same as
twenty. And maybe she’s right. Or maybe I find nothing exciting about
getting older in a world I’ve never felt was right for me.
It’s a joke, honestly. I’m Saxon Forbes—pre-med student at Columbia
University, with millionaires for parents and a grandfather who owns a
chunk of New York City. I’ve spent my entire life wanting for nothing,
except feeling alive. Everything I’ve done, every step I’ve taken in my life,
it’s always felt so out of place. Like I’ve always been an inch away from
falling off the edge but too afraid to jump.
“Happy Birthday!” my best friend Nessa shouts as her body collides
into mine. Her arms wrap around me, and the action brings a level of
comfort that I’ve always relied on.
I’ve known Nessa for most of my life, since we sat next to each other in
second grade and she demanded that we share crayons. It was probably
because I had the pack with every color imaginable inside, but regardless,
we’ve been inseparable since.
I smile and lean into her touch. “Thanks, Ness.”
She lets go and jumps in front of me, walking backward on the way to
class. “Okay, so how are we celebrating? I’m thinking a massive party. With
a seven-tiered cake with sparklers for candles.
