Sunset is my favorite time of the day. The different hues of pinks and
oranges are breathtaking and are the only colors I care to see. I wish
the sunset lasted longer but unfortunately, it’s brief. Perhaps it wouldn’t be
as special if I were always looking at it.
It’s been a boring day today since Will never came over to play. When I
went to ask my mom if she would play a card game with me, she was in her
room on the phone. She pressed the phone to her chest when I asked her
who she was talking to.
She just said, “Nobody. You’re ten years old now sweetie. Go play out
back like a big girl.”
So now I’m here. Dangling my bare feet while sitting on top of the
haystack I’m not allowed to be playing on. Looking up at my favorite sky
colors. There is no way my mom was talking to nobody. Certainly, it was
somebody. She doesn’t play pretend the way I do. Unless the person on the
phone’s name is Nobody. That would make sense. What a strange name.
I’m glad my name isn’t Nobody.
“Harper!” Will yells up to me, “What are you doing up there? Your dad
said we’re not allowed to play up there anymore. You’re going to get in
trouble. I have to show you something at the lake before it gets too dark.
We have to hurry!”
It’s about time he showed up.
I know I have to get down. My dad will be home from work soon. But I
hate walking through the rocks with no shoes and I can’t imagine how bad
it would hurt jumping down on them. I knew I shouldn’t have taken off my
sandals.
“Harper! Come on,” Will yells.
“I can’t! I lost my shoes somewhere up here,” I yell back. I frantically
look around the hay for them. If my dad finds me up here I’ll be in big
trouble. And I really want to see what Will has to show me at the lake.
I squeeze my eyes shut tight and think about the sharp rocks at the
bottom. When I open them again, Will is climbing up the haystack. He sits
next to me and begins taking off his shoes. Great. Now we’ll both be stuck
if he loses them.
