Progress, at times, can demand a step backward. Surely, Harrison Chase had
heard that somewhere before.
Harrison eyed his minute study. Mrs. Ryan had finished unpacking and
organizing his desk, but boxes of books still littered what was left of the floor
space. This study had only one small bookcase, whereas his last study had
walls of shelves.

His old ambitions had sloughed off like a layer of heavy clothing. He still
had plans—plans that would require as much work as his former desires to
make a wealthy man of himself. But he wasn’t working alone now, and he
wasn’t doing all of this for personal gain.
It was time to burn the one last relic of his old life that remained.
There was no fire going in the fireplace, but there were two candles on
the mantle that should do the job just as well.

It only took two steps to reach his desk from the doorway. He marched
around it, sat on his oak chair, and pulled out the two middle drawers
centered along the topside of his desk. Those two drawers were the reason he
purchased this desk. He lay each of the drawers on top of his desk and pulled
on the wooden divider that separated the two empty slots the drawers had left
behind. The divider slid out of the desk and with it came a secret drawer
attached to the back. It was long and thin—the perfect place to hide a letter.
He slipped his hand into the narrow opening, expecting the softened
envelope of a well-worn letter. All he felt was the smooth wooden sides of
the drawer.

Harrison cursed under his breath. He pushed the two other drawers aside
and flipped the secret drawer upside down.
Nothing.
Where the devil was it? His stomach tightened into a hard ball making it
hard to swallow or even think clearly. It had to be somewhere. If anyone read
his letter to Christine, he would be mortified beyond recovery.
He dumped out the contents of his desk drawer and scattered about the
papers, pens, and mementos from the last six years of his life, but it wasn’t
there. He opened a few of the boxes of books—nothing.
