Dylan
My first memory is baseball. I was three and I had this giant, plastic bat that I
would swing around in the backyard. I was too small to even carry that bat,
but I loved it.
My parents told me to leave it outside in the backyard, but I was never a
great listener, even back then.
Mom says that she caught me sneaking it into my bedroom one night.
She tells that story whenever people ask how I came to love baseball.
She points to that anecdote like a trophy she keeps on the shelf and says,
“That’s how I knew. Way back then at 3 years old. He was always going to
play ball.”
And I did.
I played ball with the best of them.
There’s nothing like hearing your name chanted by bleachers full of
people.
“Bates! Bates! Bates!”
Baseball has been a religion to me.
And I thought that if I gave everything over to it, baseball would take care
of me.
But… there were conditions, of course.
And I couldn’t see them.
It happened at the start of my senior year. It was meant to be my golden
year. I had already been talking to scouts. The Dodgers and I basically had
come to an agreement that I would be picked to join them in the first round.
It was the dream.
I would skip college and go straight to the majors. Start making money
for my family. Bring glory to my name.
But in the very first game, I hit the ball to the outfield, heard the crack of
the bat, and took off running. It was close, though. So, I had to slide. I
reached out, stretching my body long.
It wasn’t a searing pain.
At least, not at first.
I just felt the discomfort in my hand.
Something was wrong.
They brought in a pinch runner for me and I headed to the dugout.
I was out for the rest of the game–which we won, by the way–and when I
saw the doctor, the truth was clear.
In a fluke accident, I broke my finger.
I cried; I’ll admit it.
I got angry, too.
I wanted to punch someone or something, but of course, I wasn’t about to
risk another finger.
I was out for a month.
And in that time, other players stepped up to shine. The Dodgers called.
They were changing their story. Maybe I wouldn’t be a first rounder. Maybe I
wouldn’t be paid like one.
So, I had to make a choice.
