Jacob made his way through the dense trees, following a scent not entirely
certain why. It wasn’t drawing him in because it was his mate, but he knew
he had to follow it. Even if it meant he didn’t locate the snatchers they were
still after.

More than once in the last five years, they’d just barely slipped through
their fingers and as much as he wanted them caught, the snatched girls
returned home, his gut was telling him he had to follow this scent. Not even
Mason’s warning that it could be a trap set for him was enough to dissuade
him. He sent the rest of the Delta squad with Mason and the Charlie squad to
follow the original trail. They were closing in on the ring finally and while
this scent was important to him to follow, bringing down the snatchers was
more important, enough to do this alone. To risk further ridicule from his
brothers because he failed something else.

Oh, to them it was just a joke, and deep down, Jacob knew they didn’t
mean any of it in a mean way, were merely continuing their teenage ribbing
despite being well out of their teens. To him though, every failure was
another that showed why he was the Delta Squad Leader, why even his little
sister managed to surpass him. Then again, she surpassed their brothers as
well and he could use that against them, but if he did, they brought up the fact
that Mason, a non-family member, was a higher rank squad leader than him,
so he rarely reiterated that piece of information.

The trees began to thin out as early evening fell, the scent drawing him
increasing tenfold with the openness and his ears pick up a soft cry in the
distance. He knew that cry—perhaps not personally but he’d heard his
nephews crying for their mothers enough the last four years to know a child’s
cry.
