Max
Nikki is unlike anyone I’ve ever met. The woman will bake you a pie
in the morning and by afternoon, she’ll be crumbling it up and feeding it to
the chickens. With her, nuance matters, and she isn’t afraid to let you know.
One could say that a man should look for less. He should find a woman that’s
going to make him a pie and not feed it to the hens. Or perhaps one that’s at
least a little less an overthinker.
But… where’s the fun in that?
You’d think that attitude would’ve kept her close to me. Instead, it
landed me alone while she’s out with some asshole from Whiskey Falls. He’s
a tall, lanky dude with dark hair, facial piercings, and tattoos covering his
neck and arms. I don’t doubt he’s her type. She’s into that ‘rough guy’ look.
Though, I always imagined she liked them a little tougher looking. A big boy
with muscles and a little extra padding to spare. A little more like me.
“Max?” My buddy Quinn smacks my back hard before sitting down
next to me. I’ve known the man most my life, though to most people in town,
he’s Detective Arrows. “Pretty late for you to be down here, especially with
the ice coming in tonight. Something wrong?”
I don’t come into town much. It’s so little that I’ve gotten a reputation
for being a recluse. Unless I need a part for the tractors, I’m fairly selfsustaining, which is what I’m striving for. If anything happens with the state
of the world, I need to be ready for it. In my opinion, everyone should have a
stockpile of food, water, weapons, and ammunition. Unfortunately,
something is still missing, and that’s my girl. Lucky for me, that will change
in due time.
“You see that woman?” I nod toward the window across the street
where Jack and Nikki are sitting. He’s grinning at her like a psycho with
rounded cheeks and wide eyes. For someone looking from the outside, they’d
think she was drinking it in like he’s everything she’s ever wanted. I, though,
can see the truth. Her eyes and that fake grin would tell anyone who knows
her she’s internally screaming for a reason to run.
