“WHERE THE FUCK did I put it?” My voice got drowned out by the
compressor nail guns and circular saws my crew had going from sunup to
sundown. Construction was a loud and messy business. This was my largest
build to date and I was losing my goddamn mind.
As I exited the shell of a cabin my crew and I had been laboring on for
over a month already, I threw my hard hat into the stack of my personal
belongings. The stack that did not contain my favorite sweatshirt. I’d worn it
here, so how could it disappear? Sadly, it was not the first item I’d lost
recently. Either the pine trees were swallowing my stuff, or we had a thief
among us. Not sure who’d want the sweatshirt that had been washed and
worn so many times it was turning gray instead of black, but it was gone
nonetheless.
“Fuck,” I muttered, reprimanding myself mentally to keep better tabs on
things. The affluent woman who’d hired me several months ago was paying
big money for a state-of-the-art home that was more mansion than cabin.
How could I provide a six-thousand-square-foot mansion when I couldn’t
even keep track of my own damn clothing?
“You kiss your mama with that mouth?” came a voice behind me.
Namely, my mama’s voice.
I spun around and saw her standing amongst the pine trees, her bright
turquoise shirt, pants, caftan—whatever the hell women called the tent of
material she was wearing—standing out like a lighthouse during a storm. Her
fur-lined boots matched the rugged environment though. For once, Nikki
Hellman had made an effort to wear something practical.
As much as her outfits mystified me, my mother was, and would always
be, the most important woman in my life. I didn’t let word get out that I was a
mama’s boy, because believe me, I was a ladies’ man too, but this woman
held a special place in my heart.
“Hey, Mom. What are you doing here?” I came over to pull her into a hug
and kiss her forehead. I eyed her little sedan behind her. There was ice on the
roads this time of year and I didn’t care for her being so high up the mountain
in that stupid car. I kept trying to buy her a truck, or at least a four-wheeldrive SUV but she rejected my offer every time, saying I’d done enough.
“Just checking on my favorite son,” she said with a wink.
“Uh-huh. You only say that because the other four aren’t here.”
She waved away my comment. “You’re my favorite because you have
that nice ass that got you a billboard over the I-5 freeway. You remember
that?”
