The crowd cheers as the team scores another touchdown. I sit there
stoically, though. I’d rather be back in front of my computer, truth be
told, but my roommate insisted I come to a game with him. He’s a nerd
like me, but his girlfriend is a member of the band, so he came to see her
play.
It’s not that I have anything in particular against sports in general. They’re
just not my thing. That’s not to say that I’m some spindly legged, lanky dude.
I’m into physical fitness—just not team sports. I work out every day
religiously, and ironically enough, I was offered a spot on this very football
team, even though I’ve never played football before. The offer was most
assuredly due to my sheer size.
My high school football coach probably still weeps over my “wasted
opportunity,” as he always called it. Apparently, my size would have made
me one hell of a linebacker—his words, not mine.
My mind is more analytical, though. I’d rather lift weights and do some
reps because I know what it’ll do for the health of my body, and I enjoy my
workouts, but try to put me in some sort of organized sport where I have to
work together in a team and forget about it. That’s totally not my thing.
In my free time, I’d rather be sitting in front of a computer, cracking the
latest codes, or developing my own software. That’s my hobby. Always has
been, always will be. Well, after graduation this year, it’ll be more than a
hobby. It already is actually. Technically, I don’t even have to finish this year
out. The app I developed has already taken off, and it’s got the funding and
potential to make millions. It’s already making me enough so that I have a
pretty nest egg built up.
My parents bought me an ancient Mac from an old pawn shop when I was
ten years old. That turned out to be the beginning of my obsession with
computers and programming. I went back to that very pawn shop and found a
book on programming and taught myself how to create my own basic
software by the time I was twelve.
Another roar goes up from the crowd as the team scores its touchdown
kick. As if there was any doubt they would. Very rarely does a team miss a
touchdown kick unless the kicker is complete shit.
We’re barely to halftime, and I’m already jonesing to get out of here like a
smoker needing another cigarette.
“Come on, man. I don’t think I can sit through this shit much longer.”
Steven gives me a look. “It won’t be too much longer. Halftime is almost
here. I’ll see my girl play, and then we’ll go.”
I scowl. What are we, chicks or something, that we have to stick together
like this? I can’t leave my boy at a football game by himself?
