Baby on Board
DAKOTA
I am going to be someone’s mother.
I was pregnant.
With child.
The reality of what we’d just uncovered was a whirlpool swirling around
like a vortex within the confines of my mind. My stomach twisted and
churned as I breathed through the sudden onslaught of nausea. I stood
completely still, desperate to stop the acid crawling up my throat so I
wouldn’t vomit all over the floor. I ground down on my teeth as I scanned the
florist shop looking for a trash can I could use—just in case.
Savannah’s movement caught my attention as she pointed to the palest
peach carnation in the entire store and then to a baby-pink rose.
Baby.
I was having a baby.
“What do you think?” Savannah turned around, her face beaming with
joy. She held a handful of carnations, roses, daises, and baby’s breath all
clutched together in a quasi-bouquet.
Baby’s breath.
A living, breathing human was growing inside of me right now. One I
was going to have to take care of. Teach about life. About how to be a good,
kind, decent person.
Am I a good person?
I covered my flat belly, and my bottom lip trembled as wave after wave of
anxiety and primal fear roared through my system, obliterating every inch of
cautious excitement I’d had when Sutton and I found out we were about to be
parents.
Savannah’s gaze flicked to my hand, to where it rested over my stomach,
and then back to my face, her expression shifting to one of concern.
“Can you excuse us for a bit, hun? I need a moment with my sister to talk
this through.” Savannah patted Nancy, the florist, on the shoulder. I didn’t
even realize Nancy had been standing there helping Savannah pick out
flowers. The entire time I’d been lost within the turbulent mess that was my
mind.
“Oh, of course. I’ll just get started writing up this order and making sure
we have the right number of carnations and roses for the event this weekend.”
Happiness exuded from Nancy, the only florist in our small town, as she
bustled to the front of the store.
Savannah nodded. “Thank you. I’ll be right over.”
I stared numbly at the bouquet she was holding as I remembered the real
reason we were here. My little sister was getting married this weekend. Not
to her high school sweetheart but to a Viking of a man who planned to cart
her off to Norway. I was now married to a man from a family we’d believed
had been our arch nemesis. And was pregnant with said man’s baby.
If someone had told me last year we’d be in this very position today, I’d
have called bullshit. Except it was all true.
Our new reality.
In a single month, our lives had changed so drastically that I barely
recognized us. We had become completely different people. All while dealing
with extreme tragedies like the barn burning down. The horses we’d lost in
the fire. The insurmountable debt.
