Timmons Manor
Litton, Skipton, Yorkshire
Half-past noon
LADY ELIZABETH AMINTA Emalyn Ashton stood in front of the austere granite
structure awaiting an answer to her second rather boisterous round of
knocking. Behind her, the team of four that had pulled the Ashton ducal
carriage from London over the past twenty days stomped restlessly, tossing
their heads. Beth understood how they felt. She too could use a refreshing
beverage and a pleasant place to rest.
At her side, her maid Kendall also stirred. “Are we certain, my lady, this
is the correct location?”
Beth pushed down her own doubts. Her sister-in-law Rose had given her
quite detailed instructions on how to reach the home of her aunt. Lady Sophia
Timmons, the sister of Rose’s father, the Earl of Huntingdale, lived a rather
secluded life in a country house in the dales of Yorkshire, but Beth and her
coachman had reviewed the instructions on each of the past twenty days, as
well as inquiring at the homes and inns where they stayed along the way. She
was more than certain they had arrived at the right destination. “The sign at
the end of the road did say ‘Timmons Manor.’”
“A rather tawdry sign.”
Which had hung from only one chain, the left side drooping precariously.
It matched the general atmosphere of the house. The double wooden doors in
front of them appeared sturdy, but paint peeled away in strips, and streaks of
rust cascaded down from the ancient knocker. Overall, the house appeared
rather abandoned.
