ASIA
“No way,” I say, shaking my head and pushing away from the dinner
table. “You are all crazy and I’m not participating.” No one speaks
as I stand up and push my makeshift stool back into place. Zmaj furniture
isn’t sized for humans, but our protectors have made passable stools for us to
use.
I look around the table. The seven Zmaj warriors each meet my gaze, but my
fellow humans don’t. Well, except Michael.

Michael is pale and wide-eyed, staring and shaking his head. He mouths the
word no to me, but he won’t speak up because that’s Michael. He’s a good
guy, but not brave or prone to going against the group.

“Asia,” Riley begins, but is cut off by a groan. She grimaces as she bows her
head and holds her hand over her very swollen belly. “Ooof.”
“Are you okay my treasure?” Angota asks, one arm around her shoulders and
his other hand on her belly where their child has been growing for what
seems like forever.

“Yeah,” she sighs heavily. “He’s really active, that was a strong kick.”
I look over at Charlie. We’re both thinking the same thing. Riley should have
had that baby by now, but this is like, I don’t know, xenobiology or
something. What do we know about crossbreeding between species?
Ziva tosses her perfect hair and leans onto the table, taking over the
conversation. As per usual.

“Look, no one here is going to make you,” Ziva says and there are murmurs
of agreement around the table.
“But?” I ask, crossing my arms over my chest.

“But you have to agree, it’s a good idea,” Ziva answers.
“A good idea?” I ask. “No, a good idea is getting off this continent. A good
idea is that we run as far as possible from the Order and never look back.”
“It will do no good,” Borysk says. His voice is deep, like ridiculous bass that
rumbles when he talks, but it sure pulls your attention.
“Why?” I ask. He’s said it before and I know the answer, but I’m feeling
petulant.

He shakes his head and growls. Man of few words. Or dragon of few words,
or whatever. He’s a Zmaj. Over seven feet tall with wings, a tail, scales,
looking like a damn dragon got it on with a human. Like they all do.
“The Order has outposts all over the planet,” Othim says. “No matter where
we run, they will find us. There is no true escape.”

“Do you know if those outposts survived the Devastation?” Charlie asks.
“Yes,” Bahr says.
“How?” I ask. “The Devastation wiped out what, almost all of this planet.
How do you know they survived?”

“Because the Order is in communication with them,” Angota says.
He, unlike the others, speaks softly. But he likes to drop bombshells like this
when he does say something. His revelation takes the wind out of my sails
fast and hard. I pull out the stool and drop back on to it.
“I’m not going to lie,” I say. “This idea scares me. Bad.”
